Eddie Murphy Will Go Serious Again With ‘Cook’

Eddie Murphy in A Thousand Words

In 2007, Eddie Murphy earned an Oscar nomination for his dramatic turn in Dreamgirls. In the years since then, he’s spent his time getting terrible reviews (Meet Dave, A Thousand Words), voicing a donkey (Shrek the Third, Shrek Forever After), or planning sequels to old hits (Beverly Hills Cop 4, Triplets). But now it looks like he’s ready to get serious again.

Murphy is reportedly on board for Cook, directed by Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy). He’s stepping in for Samuel L. Jackson, who was previously attached to star. Hit the jump for more on Eddie Murphy Cook role.

If you’re more interested in the typical fall slate of festival entrees than summer’s glut of tentpole action fare, this is a great week. The Toronto International Film Festival announced the first wave of films that will play the fest in September. This is a batch of about 50 titles, which makes up only a small chunk of the programming. Usually TIFF features between two and three hundred films. No announcement yet of the Midnight Madness programming choices, always some of my faves, but this is a great start. Read More »

With everyone sleeping off the end of Sundance and taking a breather after the Superman casting announcement, there isn’t a lot of big casting news today. But here are a couple of quick hits. First up, there’s word that Abbie Cornish (Bright Star, Sucker Punch) has joined the cast of Whisperings and Lies, which was once called Rhapsody.

Bruce Beresford will direct the film about composer and pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff, and the understanding is that the focus will be on a love triangle he had with two women, likely his wife (and cousin) Natalia Satina and muse/singing protege Nina Koshetz. Abbie Cornish is reportedly set for one of those two roles, though we don’t know the specific one. Being happy that she’s got another film is good enough for me right now. More details as we hear back from reps. [Bleeding Cool]
