Al Pacino is in talks to star in Imagine, playing an aging rocker who “decides to change his life after discovering a letter written to him by John Lennon.” The note inspires him to reach out to his biological son, whom he’s never met. Imagine will be the directorial debut of Dan Fogelman, the screenwriter behind Tangled and the upcoming Crazy Stupid Love. Fogelman has written the script for Imagine as well.
At one point, Steve Carrell was attached to play the son. He’s since dropped out of the role, though he remains involved as a producer. Which means we get to talk about who might be a good fit to fill the part — who do you think could play Pacino’s son? [Variety]

We reported on the last round of casting for Celeste and Jesse Forever just the other day, when Emma Roberts, Ari Graynor and Chris Messina joined the cast of the film that follows Rashida Jones (who co-wrote) and Andy Samberg as a couple who tries to maintain their friendship while still living in the same house during their divorce. Now Elijah Wood has signed on as well; THR says he’ll be “Celeste’s business partner, a metrosexual who tries to be her ‘saucy gay friend.’” I’m not sure if that means the character is gay, or if he’s a straight guy who tries to play that role with Celeste (Rashida Jones). Either way, I’ll be happy to see Elijah Wood do outright comedy, since we don’t often see him in that mode on the big screen.

Mere days before the mega-hit Jackass 3D (without the D) hits DVD and Blu-ray, Paramount is taking steps to make sure they remain in the Jackass business. First up, they’ve purchased a pitch called First Man which will star Johnny Knoxville as a rowdy guy whose wife is elected President of the United States. Second, they’re revamping a previously purchased project called Mustache Riders that follows three crooks who search for buried treasure with a “grizzled old outlaw.” The three crooks would be played by Knoxville, Bam Margera and Ryan Dunn while the outlaw would be Willie Nelson. Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers?

Fans of Broken Lizard’s Super Troopers will be glad to know that things are moving along nicely for a sequel. According to Movie Cultists, they have independent financing and are looking to make a deal with Fox as well. Steve Lemme describes the situation as follows:
We’re like, three drafts into it. It’s funny, because we have an independent financier — we have a lot of independent financiers — who are like, ‘Give us that fucking movie.’ And we’re like, ‘We will, we will but we have to go through a studio first.’ But it’s a great thing to go to a studio and say, ‘We have the money.’

/Film photo scooper Christopher M sent us a bunch of photos from the set of Broken Lizard’s Slammin’ Salmon. I’m not a big fan of the improvised comedy style, but i understand that a lot of /Film readers love Broken Lizard, so I’m posting the photos. The film tells the story of a former heavyweight boxing champion named Cleon “Slammin’” Salmon (Michael Clarke Duncan), who is now the owner of a Miami restaurant. Salmon institutes a competition to see which waiter can earn the most money in one night. The winner will earn $10,000, while the loser will endure a beating at the hands of the champ.
