Kanye West has unveiled the first Yeezus trailer, and it’s… something. The music is fantastic, as you’d expect, and the imagery is colorful, arresting, and bizarrely beautiful. What’s missing is any explanation of what Yeezus actually is.
West’s website simply says that it’s a film “directed by Hype Williams coming to theaters,” and from what we can tell it looks like a concert film from his Yeezus tour. But given that Bret Easton Ellis recently revealed that he was working on a feature with West, this could be something a little different from your typical concert movie. Hit the jump to watch the video and to get the latest word on the Ellis-scripted film.

Bret Easton Ellis‘s last film, The Canyons, didn’t get much in the way of critical acclaim, but it nevertheless received a lot of attention for a splashy cast that included Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen. Now, for his next project, he’s joining forces with another tabloid-friendly celebrity: Kanye West.
According to Ellis, it was West who approached him about the project, and West’s new album Yeezus that inspired Ellis to accept. Hit the jump to read his comments.

We’ve wondered about the Paul Schrader and Bret Easton Ellis film The Canyons for months, after watching the casting, the spectacle of the production dealing with Lindsay Lohan, the festival rejection, and all those slapdash early trailers.
The film is out now, and reviews, well, aren’t great. But the folks at IFC have come up with a great marketing angle: get one of the most popular and/or controversial artists of the day to put hands on a new trailer. And so we’ve got a re-cut version of the theaterical trailer (editing by Nate Brown) with a new score by Kanye West and Noah Goldstein. Check it out below. Read More »
The Canyons, that ultra-low-budget film cooked up by Bret Easton Ellis (screenwriter) and Paul Schrader (director) has been the subject of much talk for a solid year. The two cast Lindsay Lohan when no one else would, and profiles have detailed her difficult behavior even as Schrader praises his leading lady as a Marilyn Monroe type. Opposite Lohan is porn star James Deen, making a crossover leap.
We’ve seen terrible-looking “fake” trailers for the film and watched as the film scored an unusually public rejection from SXSW. Steven Soderbergh even offered to edit the movie, teasing one of the film’s sex scenes in the process. (Also teased in more graphic detail here.)
The constant talk buzzing around the film was enough to get the interest of IFC, which picked up the movie in February. Now there’s a trailer, and it also seems to tease that sex scene in a not-quite-not-safe-for-work moment featuring Lohan. Read More »
I feel like the team behind The Canyons is just playing with us at this point — can the movie really be as lifeless as the teasers indicate? Is the listless acting part of the point, and meant to be some comment about the lives of the rich and idle in southern California?
Written by Bret Easton Ellis (Less Than Zero, American Psycho) and directed by Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver, Cat People), the film features Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen, among others, in a story that appears to be focused on sex, desire and power. The trailer IDs all the major players in the film without doing much to explain what they’re all doing beyond having sex with one another, perhaps illicitly.
Check out the teaser, which is not safe for work due to language, below. Read More »

Paul Schrader and Bret Easton Ellis‘ The Canyons was never going for subtlety or elegance, and the marketing seems to be having some fun playing up that fact. The first trailer was cut to mimic grindhouse and exploitation movies of the ’70s, whereas the latest one has been done up like black-and-white ’50s pulp. No indication yet on what style the actual movie will take — presumably it’ll be something a bit more contemporary — but for now we can give them kudos for trying something a little different with the teasers.
What we might not be able to give them credit for, if these trailers are any indication, is making a good movie. All the cheeky wink-winks can’t cover up the fact that The Canyons looks genuinely terrible. Perhaps we should’ve expected that when Schrader and Ellis cast porn star James Deen and the notoriously troubled Lindsay Lohan as the leads. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Has Paul Schrader created a film that might have played at a theater his defining character Travis Bickle might have visited in Taxi Driver? Schrader directs The Canyons, written by Bret Eason Ellis and starring Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen. The first real trailer for the film is cut in a style meant to mimic classic exploitation or grind house style. Trouble is, the music and editing might be the most appealing thing about this footage.
