The Guard, starring Brendon Gleeson and Don Cheadle, became a tidy little art-house hit last year, and director John Michael McDonagh is planning his next film, called The Calvary.
The movie is set to shoot this September, and has distribution sales going on in Berlin right now. The film brings Gleeson and McDonagh back together, and is now adding Chris O’Dowd and Aidan Gillen, with Kelly Reilly and David Wilmot joining as well. Read More »

You’d be forgiven for suffering from pirate fatigue after this year’s lackluster fourth entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but these delightful trailers for Aardman Animation’s The Pirates! Band of Misfits prove there’s still plenty of fun to be found on the high seas.
Directed by Peter Lord and Jeff Newitt, the stop motion adventure follows an eager but misguided Pirate Captain (Hugh Grant) as he competes for the Pirate of the Year Award — because, as he explains, “Every time I’ve entered, I’ve failed to win. So, I must have a really good chance this time.” Along the way, he and his similarly off-kilter crew (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, Ashley Jensen, and a fish with a hat on it) encounter all manner of strange characters including lepers, stuffy scientists, an evil queen (Imelda Staunton), and at least one monkey butler. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Can you resist the grinning appeal of a new claymation animated film from Aardman Animation? I’m not certain that I can, if the first trailer for The Pirates! Band of Misfits is any indication. The film adapts Gideon Defoe‘s book The Pirates! In an Adventure With Scientists — a loopy tale of high-seas misadventure and scientfic discovery — with a vocal cast that includesHugh Grant, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brian Blessed, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen.
Here’s a new UK trailer for the film, which bears the original subtitle ‘In an Adventure With Scientists,’ and pushes the overall story structure more than the last US trailer, but keeps the levels of charm and appeal as high as the crow’s nest. Read More »

Robert Redford‘s directorial effort The Company You Keep already boasts a top-notch cast, with Julie Christie, Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte, Brit Marling, Shia LaBeouf, Stanley Tucci, Richard Jenkins, Stephen Root, and Redford himself all signed on. But apparently, there’s still room on the roster for more impressive talent. Anna Kendrick, Terrence Howard, Brendan Gleeson, and Sam Elliott have just boarded the cast of the political thriller, along with 11-year-old newcomer (and America’s Got Talent finalist) Jackie Evancho.
The Lem Dobbs-scripted adaptation of Neil Gordon‘s novel centers around Jim Grant (Redford), a former Weather Underground member who’s been on the FBI’s wanted list for the past three decades. When a determined young reporter uncovers the truth about his past, he’s forced to go on the run. With so many new actors joining up, there’s a lot of info to sort through, so hit the jump for more info on their roles.

Literary adaptations can have a reputation for being stuffy, but James McTeigue‘s The Raven looks anything but. The story, which is not based on legendary writer Edgar Allan Poe‘s poem of the same title, revolves around Poe (John Cusack) as he gets pulled into a serial killer case when a young Baltimore detective (Luke Evans) realizes that the murderer has modeled his crimes after Poe’s works. (Like a 19th-century Castle, I guess.) McTeigue is the director behind such visually striking actioners as V for Vendetta and Ninja Assassin, and The Raven looks to be along those same lines. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Cool Posts From Around the Web:
Aardman Animation doesn’t just have the CGI holiday film Arthur Christmas to release in the next year. The company also has the stop-motion The Pirates! Band of Misfits, based in part on Gideon Defoe‘s book The Pirates! In an Adventure With Scientists. The cast was announced not long ago, and is a thing of beauty: Hugh ‘News of the World Killer’ Grant, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brian Blessed, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen.
The trailer for the film hit today, and if you are (a) dissatisfied with the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, (b) hungry for anything new from Aardman, (c) ready to see a weirdly appropriate use of a Ramones song in a kids’ pirate movie, or (d) all of the above, check it out after the break. The ubiquitous Michael Fassbender will be joining fellow Irishmen Gabriel Byrne, Colin Farrell, Cillian Murphy and Domhnall Gleeson in Brendan Gleeson‘s directorial debut, a big-screen adaptation of Flann O’Brien‘s classic novel At Swim-Two-Birds. The project has been a long time in the works — Gleeson initially acquired the book rights seven years ago — but it seems to finally be picking up steam thanks to some new financers. Shooting is scheduled to begin next spring.
First published in 1939, At Swim-Two-Birds is considered one of the greatest examples of metafiction ever written. The plot revolves around a university student and writer whose characters rebel and eventually conspire to kill him. Although I’ve never read the novel, that all-star cast seems like reason enough to get excited for the film. [ThePlaylist]
After the jump, Isabelle Huppert joins a mystery project and Roswell FM gets two more stars.

Update: Two more images were released over the weekend, and you can see them in the gallery below.
We’ve seen another shot or two, semi-official and not at all official, of John Cusack in costume as Edgar Allan Poe in James McTeigue‘s film The Raven. Now this is the first for-real official shot of the character, and the only downside is that it looks like the other shots.
Still, The Raven has settled on a March 9, 2012 release date (and evidently decided to keep the title The Raven), and I’m very interested to see more from the movie in which Poe ends up looking for a killer whose methods seem tied to the author’s work. We’ll see some footage at Comic Con when Relativity presents the film in Hall H on Friday July 22, but for now you can see the full image after the break. Read More »
Sony and Aardman Animation have teamed for a new 3D stop-motion animated film, called The Pirates! Band of Misfits, based in part on Gideon Defoe‘s book The Pirates! In an Adventure With Scientists. (Which is also the film’s title in the UK, I believe.) That isn’t news, but the first still, above, and the announcement of the full cast definitely is.
Aardman co-founder and Chicken Run co-director Peter Lord is directing the film, which is animated in the now-classic Aardman clay figure style, and he’s got Hugh Grant making his clay debut as the chap you see above. There are a bunch of other great names on hand to provide voices as well, and you can get the full list after the break. Read More »
