NBC has won the bidding war for a new comedy series by Sarah Silverman, beating out competing networks ABC and Fox. Loosely based on Silverman’s own life, the untitled single-camera show will star the comedian as a woman getting back into single life after getting out of a ten-year relationship. Silverman is set to co-write the pilot with Dan Sterling and Jon Schroeder, both of whom worked on her previous series The Sarah Silverman Program.
Also on board with the project is Ron Howard, who has been “deeply involved” with the show’s development, and his Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer. Worth noting: The last time Grazer and Howard collaborated on a single-camera network comedy series, the result was Arrested Development. I’ll be keeping an eye on this one. [The Hollywood Reporter]

Boardwalk Empire has a second season coming soon, and there is now a one-minute trailer for the new season. It looks utterly fantastic, packed with intimidation, conflict and violence. It seems to always go this way. A show is successful, and then those pulling the financial strings want to figure out how to make more money out of it. One way is by trimming the budget. And that is evidently what Frank Darabont faces as he preps the second season of The Walking Dead. The show has already seen its share of controversy, thanks to the report that the second season would do without a writing staff, but this might be a far more difficult thing to manage. Boardwalk Empire looks like it might be facing some budget questions, too — that’s a bit ominous, since HBO is the company that shut down Deadwood because it was too expensive — and that is a much more expensive show, with more to lose.

Here’s something for those who have wanted to see Inception nominated or awarded with more significant honors than the film has been given so far in the awards season. Sure, the top prize from the American Society of Cinematographers is essentially a technical award, but it is the technical award, and taking the prize is no small honor. The Directors Guild of America announced its award winners for achievement in 2010 last night, and the big winner was Tom Hooper, director of The King’s Speech. That, in conjunction with the film’s victory at the Producers Guild awards, puts the movie as the odds-on favorite to win the Best Picture Oscar, and makes Mr. Hooper a likely win for Best Director as well.
