Emma Stone as Billie Jean King

There are currently three movies in the works about Billie Jean King. The one potential version that appears closer to first reaching theaters is the Fox Searchlight production called Battle of the Sexes, directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine), which has Danny Boyle (Steve Jobs) attached as a producer. The project was sweetened by Emma Stone playing Billie Jean King until she was forced to drop out due to scheduling conflicts earlier this year. But now she’s back.

Elizabeth Banks in Walk of Shame

Elizabeth Banks and Paul Giamatti will be going head-to-head on the tennis court. The pair have signed on for HBO Films’ untitled project about the 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs.

Will Ferrell tennis movie

Anchorman star Will Ferrell is going back to the ’70s — but this time, he’ll be the guy making the news, not reporting it. Ferrell is attached to star in Match Maker, a drama about the legendary 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match between Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King.

Steve Conrad (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) is adapting the script from a 2013 ESPN article by Don Van Natta Jr. titled “The Match Maker: Bobby Riggs, the Mafia and the Battle of the Sexes.” More details after the jump.

Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King

Danny Boyle‘s next move could be a sports film. The British filmmaker is reportedly working on a biopic of tennis icon Billie Jean King, specifically her legendary “Battle of the Sexes” match against Bobby Riggs in 1973.

That sounds pretty interesting as it is, but what makes this project even more intriguing is that it reunites him with two men behind his biggest recent successes: writer Simon Beaufoy and producer Christian Colson, who both worked on Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours.
