When Independence Day hit theaters in 1996, it brought the spectacle of global destruction, exciting action, some decent laughs, and an ensemble of memorable characters with nary a huge movie star in sight. Twenty years later, Independence Day: Resurgence attempts to deliver all that again. But despite a plot point out of left field that shifts the sequel away from a simple retread of the original and toward an absolute bonkers, universe-expanding set-up for a sequel, this follow-up falls flat and lacks any of the heart, charm, efficiency and exhilaration that makes the first one entertaining to this day.

A bunch of new footage combined with what we’ve seen in the previous trailers gives us our best glimpse yet at the story, characters and pure destruction awaiting us this summer. However, I will say if you’re already on board with seeing this movie, don’t watch this trailer, because it shows a little too much.

Now another viral video has surfaced in the form of a recruitment video for Earth Space Defense with William Fichtner asking you to be all you can be…in space. We also get to hear part of a speech that President Lanford (Sela Ward) gives in the movie In addition, you can actually go enlist in ESD and play a few mini games to unlock some new footage from the film. Today is Earth Day, and what better way to celebrate our beautiful planet than by gleefully looking forward to its complete and utter destruction? 20th Century Fox has just unveiled the latest Independence Day: Resurgence trailer, which sees the aliens returning 20 years later, stronger and more brutal than ever before. Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, and Brent Spiner return from the original, while Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, and Jessie Usher lead a new generation of Earth Space Defense pilots.
Oh, and to celebrate Earth Day in less ironic fashion, 20th Century Fox has also dropped a new Earth Day PSA featuring Earth Space Defense director David Levinson (Goldblum) explaining different ways we at home can help save the planet. Plus, to get that patriotic spirit going, they’re offering a download of the original Independence Day for just $0.99. The hot new trend in studio filmmaking these days is sequels that also act as first acts for a new franchise, taking your love of a past property and using it to launch another series (usually a trilogy) of movies. Some of these, like Jurassic World, are enormous financial successes, tickling old school nostalgia while giving new fans something to embrace. Others, like Terminator: Genisys, die on the vine and make everyone who talked about a sequel months before the original came out look very silly.
As I watched the new Independence Day: Resurgence TV spot, I couldn’t quite begin to guess which direction Roland Emmerich‘s belated sequel will go. I can easily imagine this thing being an enormous hit or a gigantic flop. Are regular folks excited for an Independence Day sequel? I have no clue. But I do know that this TV spot features some nifty visuals and the return of Brent Spiner‘s Dr. Brackish Okun, who supposedly perished during the events of the first movie.

Easily one of the most iconic parts of 1996’s blockbuster Independence Day is the speech Bill Pullman gives as President Whitmore before humanity makes their last stand across the globe. But we might not get the same kind of moment in Independence Day: Resurgence since President Whitmore is no longer the sitting president. In fact, he’s apparently living a quiet life in the suburbs when the sequel begins and his daughter has the more exciting job working alongside a new president.
The new Commander-in-Chief is President Lanford, played by Sela Ward (Gone Girl, The Day After Tomorrow). Even though it doesn’t sound like she’ll get the same kind of action that President Whitmore saw in the original movie, she still has plenty to deal with when the aliens return. Plus, Pullman and Ward and more than willing to star in their own spin-off where their presidents team up and utilize their secret kung fu and karate skills.
