independence day resurgence tv spot

The hot new trend in studio filmmaking these days is sequels that also act as first acts for a new franchise, taking your love of a past property and using it to launch another series (usually a trilogy) of movies. Some of these, like Jurassic World, are enormous financial successes, tickling old school nostalgia while giving new fans something to embrace. Others, like Terminator: Genisys, die on the vine and make everyone who talked about a sequel months before the original came out look very silly.

As I watched the new Independence Day: Resurgence TV spot, I couldn’t quite begin to guess which direction Roland Emmerich‘s belated sequel will go. I can easily imagine this thing being an enormous hit or a gigantic flop. Are regular folks excited for an Independence Day sequel? I have no clue. But I do know that this TV spot features some nifty visuals and the return of Brent Spiner‘s Dr. Brackish Okun, who supposedly perished during the events of the first movie.

Independence Day Resurgence Interview

Easily one of the most iconic parts of 1996’s blockbuster Independence Day is the speech Bill Pullman gives as President Whitmore before humanity makes their last stand across the globe. But we might not get the same kind of moment in Independence Day: Resurgence since President Whitmore is no longer the sitting president. In fact, he’s apparently living a quiet life in the suburbs when the sequel begins and his daughter has the more exciting job working alongside a new president.

The new Commander-in-Chief is President Lanford, played by Sela Ward (Gone Girl, The Day After Tomorrow). Even though it doesn’t sound like she’ll get the same kind of action that President Whitmore saw in the original movie, she still has plenty to deal with when the aliens return. Plus, Pullman and Ward and more than willing to star in their own spin-off where their presidents team up and utilize their secret kung fu and karate skills.

Bill Pullman Independence Day

After almost two decades, it’s mind-boggling to think a sequel to Independence Day is finally coming together. Years and years of rumor and speculation all seemed unfounded until last week when 20th Century Fox announced that July 3, 2015 would mark the triumphant return of the 1996 film. Director Roland Emmerich will be back, along with his production partner Dean Devlin, and the story is set 20 years after events of the original. Earth has been rebuilt, we’ve begun to grow thanks to the alien technology, and then the motherships return hoping to settle the score.

Half the cast will be new faces; a new generation who has grown up in the world decimated in the first film. The other will be stars from the first movie. So who is returning and who isn’t? Well, Will Smith will not return as Captain Steven Hiller but Emmerich just confirmed Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum will indeed return, both of whom had expressed interest in the past. Read More »

Independence Day White House

In this summer’s White House Down, director Roland Emmerich will once again wreak havoc on the President’s pad. It’s a place he knows well, having first blown it up 1996’s Independence Day. Ever since that film was released, fans have discussed a sequel and in the past few months, Emmerich and his producer Dean Devlin have confirmed sequels are in the works: ID Forever Part One and ID Forever Part Two.

Emmerich has now revealed the seed that the sequels will grow from, as well as the timeline and the main characters. The films take place about 20 years after the original film, and the world has been rebuilt. Twenty years, it seems, is about how long it takes for the aliens to respond to a distress call their destroyed friends sent out at the end of the first film.

He also revealed he and Devlin have completed two scripts and James Vanderbilt, the writer of The Amazing Spider-Man and White House Down, is currently doing the rewrites.
