Despite gaining attention in The Mummy and making the occasional appearance in something like Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful, Rachel Weisz has developed a talent for sidestepping most big studio movies in favor of more focused, and more adult fare. Her film The Whistleblower is just opening now, and she’s got three films appearing in the Toronto International Film Festival next month.

One is Fernando Meirelles’ 360 (see some images here); another is Terence Davies’ The Deep Blue Sea; and a third film, Page Eight, was just announced for the fest yesterday. We’ll concentrate on that last picture for now — it’s a spy thriller from The Reader screenwriter David Hare, in which Weisz plays a political activist and Bill Nighy is an MI5 agent concerned with just what she knows and intents. First Look: Colin Farrell in ‘Total Recall’

Yesterday we saw the first images of sets for the new Total Recall sets, on them some white-suited troopers. Now we’ve got the first image of Colin Farrell in the lead role of Doug Quaid, a factory worker who learns, or thinks he learns, that he is really a spy for one of two nation states, Euromerica or New Shanghai. See the full image after the break.  Read More »

New animation from Aardman Animation (Wallace & Gromit) is like a gift, so the company is (appropriately) making a Christmas film called, er, Arthur Christmas. We’ve seen one brief, cheeky teaser trailer, and now there is a second just as cheeky teaser to put you in mind of the November release. It’s good stuff; check it out along with a new poster for the film, after the break. Read More »

With an August 2012 release date looming, shooting on Len Wiseman‘s remake of Total Recall is set to begin next week in Toronto. We know that Colin Farrell will be Douglas Quaid and Bryan Cranston will be one of the villains but what of the two ladies in Quaid’s life, so famously portrayed by in the original Sharon Stone and Rachel Ticotin? Previous reports have now confirmed to be true as Wiseman’s wife, Kate Beckinsale, will be playing Lori, Quaid’s wife in his “normal” life and Jessica Biel will be Rachel, the girl Quaid meets in his spy life. Also just announced is that Bill Nighy, who played a pretty gruesome character in the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, has been cast as Quatto, the leader of the resistance. The Clash of the Titans sequel, which has been referred to as Wrath of the Titans but a press release today calls Clash of the Titans 2, started shooting this week under the direction of Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles). Sam Worthington returns to star as Perseus, but it looks like Gemma Arterton‘s commitment to Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters means she definitely won’t be in the film, as her name is MIA from the release. We’ve now got a pretty full cast line-up, and a full plot for the film, after the break. Read More »

Watch More Behind the Scenes of ‘Rango’

We’re pretty excited for Rango, the new Gore Verbinski-directed animated feature starring Johnny Depp as a charismatic chameleon. And we’re not the only ones. Paramount’s clearly pushing this film hard, even buying it a commercial during the Super Bowl. Now that’s commitment.

A couple of months ago, we showed you a making-of featurette for Rango titled “Behind the Scenes: Natural Acting Experience,” which demonstrated Verbinski’s new technique for creating CGI characters. As Peter put it, “Imagine something like how they filmed Avatar, but without all the motion capture suits, balls, and green screen.” A new B-roll shows more footage of the cast and crew in action. It’s all quite fun and charming. Check it out after the jump. Read More »

Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada, Easy A) and Bill Nighy (Deathly Hallows Part 1, Love Actually) have joined the cast of director Bryan Singer‘s Jack the Giant Killer. The 3D fantasy/adventure project has been billed as an “adult look at the Jack and the Beanstalk legend.” The plot summary is as follows: “When a princess is kidnapped, a long-standing peace between men and giants becomes threatened, and a young farmer is given an opportunity to lead a dangerous expedition to the giant kingdom to rescue her.”
