The coming of age sex comedy The To Do List, formerly called The Hand Job, has been on our radar since it began to assemble a massive cast of young comedic talent. Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation, Scott Pilgrim) plays a young woman who wants to head into college with a wealth of sexual experience under her belt, and so spends her post-senior summer trying to check off items on a sexual to-do list. You could probably make a pretty fun movie by cutting together footage from all the different films that feature actors playing Andy Warhol — his own I’m Not There, as it might become. If you wait a few months you’d be able to add Bill Hader‘s performance, which looks, physically at least, to be pretty spot-on. This is from Men in Black III, the troubled Barry Sonnenfeld sequel starring Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin. There has been no small amount of bad press about the film, much of it centered around the fact that no one could figure out what the movie is supposed to be, even after a big chunk had already been shot. But hey, at least Bill Hader looks pretty good as Warhol. Don’t expect his appearance in the film to add up to much more than an extended cameo, but I’ll take it. Last year Maggie Carey‘s film The Hand Job was announced, in which Aubrey Plaza would play a high school graduate who decides she needs a lot more sexual experience before college, and proceeds to work her way through a checklist of, er, action items. Yesterday many more cast members were announced and today we have even more, and roles for many of them.
Connie Britton will play the main character’s “liberal, free-spirited mother,” Mae Whitman and Alia Shawkat are two of her best friends; and Scott Porter will play a guy in a band that Plaza has a crush on.
Dominic Dierkes and D.C. Pierson (along with their Derrick Comedy co-member Don Glover) will play lifeguards; Bill Hader will be their stoned boss at the pool. Johnny Simmons is Plaza’s classmate and co-worker, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse is his sci-fi nerd best friend. There will be a few more roles cast yet, but this is a great cast so far. And after Easy A I very much welcome more efforts to turn the typical male coming of age sex comedy into a story outline that girls can get lost in, too. [Variety]

The other day we told you about Vaughn Meader, a film that is being developed as a star vehicle for Bill Hader. It isn’t a big broad studio comedy, however. The actor would play real-life comedian and impersonator Vaughn Meader, who built a career out of a JFK impression that was enjoyed by huge audiences — the President even loved it — and then saw that career disappear virtually overnight when Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.
Rob Siegel was said to be involved, and the script sounds as if it has some of the key elements of sweetness and darkness that characterized his last two big scripts, The Wrestler and Big Fan. Now we know that he will also direct Vaughn Meader, which makes the movie even more promising. Read More »

One is The Hand Job, a film that is being spearheaded by his wife Maggie Carey. She wrote the script, which ended up on the 2009 Black List, and plans to direct with star Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation, Funny People, Scott Pilgrim) as a graduating high school girl in 1993 who wants to gather some sexual experience before going off to college. Is Bill Hader going to be one of the next true breakout comedy stars? He’s certainly one of the highlights of Greg Mottola’s Paul, where he steals just about any scene in which he appears — and does so while working opposite some great comic talent. It may be a little early for Bill Hader to really break out in Zach Galifianakis or Danny McBride style, but he’s heading that direction, and now has two films in development that could offer him new ways to earn the affections of a broad audience. Universal Pictures has released an uncensored red band movie trailer for Superbad/Adventureland director Greg Mottola‘s sci-fi adventure comedy Paul which stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (and an alien voiced by Seth Rogen).
