Avatar came out six years ago. It doesn’t feel like it’s been that long, but that’s how long it’s been since director James Cameron‘s 3D fantasy film made almost $3 billion dollars. You can’t really dismiss a movie that made that much money as a fluke, but some wonder if the movie just hit at the right time. Is Pandora a world people really want to return to? Are audiences aching to go on three more adventures with Jake Scully (Sam Worthington)? The people who ask those questions are whom Cameron wants to prove wrong in 2017.
After the jump, read the director’s latest comments on the Avatar sequels.

We won’t get another Avatar movie until 2017 — and that’s assuming James Cameron actually meets his deadline this time instead of blowing past it yet again — but in the meantime there are other ways to get to Pandora. It’s been nearly six years since James Cameron brought his blockbuster sensation Avatar to theaters, and fans have been patiently waiting for the sequels to begin hitting the big screen. Sadly, we’ve still got a little over two years before the first of three sequels arrives in the winter of 2017. But a new partnership should help hold fans over.

Even though special effects have never been better than they were today, there’s always room for improvement. For example, even though we’ve had stellar digital visual effects at our disposal awhile now, there have been plenty of disappointments on the big screen. In fact, one area where Hollywood sometimes had difficulties was in creating realistic movie explosions. But thankfully, science stepped up to help.
A new video from Theodore Kim, professor of Media Arts, Technology and Computer Science at the University of California, explains how Hollywood has been able to create realistic explosions in movies, and it’s all thanks to a fancy algorithm. Read More »

At the last D23 Expo in 2013, Disney didn’t have much to reveal about Disney World’s upcoming theme park land based on James Cameron‘s epic Avatar franchise, offering just a vague tease of props and photos from Imagineering’s research scout to Pandora.
In February we got a bit more information when Walt Disney Imagineering released a video of the filmmaker visiting the Bioluminescent Forrest behind closed doors. Later that year, Disney finally revealed their plans and concept art for the upcoming project, with construction begining on Pandora in January 2014 in Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Orlando Florida.
At D23 Expo 2015, Walt Disney Imagineering finally let fans get a close-up look at what they’re planning for Avatar Land. Hit the jump to see photos from the show floor exhibit and learn more about the upcoming theme park land.

Dinosaurs assemble! Universal Pictures returned to the world of prehistoric action this summer with Jurassic World, a simultaneous sequel and reboot of the popular film franchise started by Steven Spielberg in 1993. The film has been a runaway hit, spending a few weekends at #1 (which isn’t easy in today’s crowded summer release calendar), and now it’s officially even bigger.
Today, Jurassic World officially passed The Avengers on the worldwide box office gross chart to become the #3 highest grossing movie ever. The only two films ahead of Jurassic World are James Cameron’s monstrous hits, Best Picture winner Titanic at #2 and sci-fi spectacle Avatar at #1.

It goes without saying that James Cameron has a lot more story to tell in the universe first seen in Avatar. As it stands now, three sequel films are in development, and if all goes according to plan they will be released each year starting in 2017. However, according to one of Cameron’s frequent collaborators, there may be more.
James Horner, the Oscar-winning composer of Titanic who also did Avatar and Aliens, said that Cameron currently has a script for a fourth sequel – let’s call it Avatar 5 – that he’s trying to condense back into the previously planned three sequels. Slowly but surely, the world will remember Avatar. It’s kind of hard to believe that a film that grossed over $2 billion worldwide needs to be reintroduced to audiences but by the time the second film comes out in December 2017, eight years will have passed between movies. And with three sequels on the way, as well as a permanent Disney theme park, many people have lots of money riding on James Cameron‘s world of Pandora.
Now, it seems like one of the first ways people will be re-introduced to Avatar is a traveling exhibition that will allow fans to literally walk around Pandora, interacting with the animals and plant life that made the film so unique and evocative.
