A new poster and trailer have dropped for New Year’s Eve, Garry Marshall‘s follow-up to his commercial hit Valentine’s Day. The film appears to be essentially just Valentine’s Day with warmer clothing and some casting changes. Once again, Marshall brings together lots of big-name celebs for a collection of interlinked love stories that revolve around the holiday name-checked in the title.
This time around, the stars are Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Hector Elizondo, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Katherine Heigl, Josh Duhamel, Til Schweiger, Lea Michele, Zac Efron, Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vergara, Alyssa Milano, Hilary Swank, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ice Cube, Seth Meyers, John Stamos, Jon Bon Jovi, John Lithgow, Ludacris, and Ryan Seacrest, who all converge in or around Times Square on New Year’s Eve. The first trailer has dropped for New Year’s Eve, Garry Marshall‘s not-quite-sequel to his 2010 hit Valentine’s Day. If you’ve ever seen Valentine’s Day, you probably know what to expect: big-name celebrities, a bunch of disparate storylines, and people crowing about how goddamn magical the holiday in question is.
This time around, many mini-plotlines converge in New York City on the titular holiday, and the cast consists of Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Biel, Hector Elizondo, Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Katherine Heigl, Josh Duhamel, Til Schweiger, Lea Michele, Zac Efron, Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vergara, Alyssa Milano, Hilary Swank, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michelle Pfeiffer, Abigail Breslin, Ice Cube, Seth Meyers, John Stamos, Jon Bon Jovi, John Lithgow, Ludacris, and Ryan Seacrest. Ashton Kutcher‘s last few films haven’t been massive earners, but now he is poised to make a film that could bring him to a fresh young audience. He is part of a project set up at Sony called What Would Kenny Do?, in which a 17-year old encounters his 30-year old self. Oh, that old gag! We’ll keep this one quick because, well, it’s another casting report about New Year’s Eve, the sorta-spinoff romcom from Valentine’s Day director Garry Marshall. The film already has Robert De Niro, Ashton Kutcher, Sofia Vergara, Halle Berry, Zac Efron, Jessica Biel, Michelle Pfeiffer, Abigail Breslin, Hilary Swank, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jon Bon Jovi, Seth Meyers, Til Schweiger and Sienna Miller set to appear.
Now The Wrap says that Josh Duhamel has signed on, but doesn’t specify his role. I know you’re on pins and needles. But wait! THR comes to the rescue, verifying that report and adding that he’ll be one of the leads, “a hopeless romantic who spends the day trying to get to New York in the hope of getting to a party in order to re-meet a mystery girl from the previous year.” Meanwhile Ice ‘Fuck tha Police’ Cube is in talks to play a NYPD cop who is working in some capacity with Hilary Swank’s character, the director of the Times Square celebration. And Ryan Seacrest has the best role of all: himself.
The multi-thread romcom New Year’s Eve (a sorta spin-off from last year’s Valentine’s Day) has quite the cast. So far Robert De Niro, Ashton Kutcher, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank, Abigail Breslin, Sofia Vergara, Jessica Biel, Sarah Jessica Parker, Halle Berry, Zac Efron, Lea Michele and more
are all set to get paid for doing a couple weeks of work on the film.

Paramount Pictures has released a red band movie trailer for Ghostbusters/Meatballs director Ivan Reitman‘s new comedy No Strings Attached. The movie follows a lonely doctor who gets lucky with a pretty co-worker (played by Natalie Portman) in a “comedy about the complications of friends with benefits.” The film costars Ashton Kutcher, Greta Gerwig, Mindy Kaling, Olivia Thirlby, Kevin Kline, Lake Bell, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, and the next breakout comedy actor (in my opinion) Jake Johnson.
The film actually started out with another title, Fuckbuddies. Of course, Paramount didn’t want to face the problems associated with releasing a movie under that title, so they changed it to Friends With Benefits, which eventually got changed into the truly horrible title No Strings Attached (at least they didn’t go with “No Strings”, the abbreviated title they were testing). The reason they moved on from Friends With Benefits is that another film had already staked claim to the title Friends With Benefits. A day after Paramount released the first trailer for No Strings Attached, Screen Gems released a red band movie for their R-Rated romantic comedy starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis featuring a very similar premise. I thought that must be what makes them different — one is raunchy, and the other isn’t. Looks like I was wrong.
It seems like Paramount is following suit, and has released their own red band trailer. This is one of those red band trailers which is out to prove the movie isn’t just a cookie cutter comedy and is a filthy r-rated movie. So in other words, how many cuts of swears, nudity and sex can you fit into three minutes (not that that’s a bad thing…). Watch it now embedded after the jump.

Within the next six weeks, someone you like a lot is virtually guaranteed to be cast in New Year’s Eve, the ensemble romantic comedy that is a sorta-spin-off from Valentine’s Day. I apologize in advance. For me, it has already happened, as Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer are negotiating for roles in the film. So are Hilary Swank and Ashton Kutcher.
THR lays out the structure: the film “tells intertwining stories of a group of New Yorkers as they navigate their way through romance over the course of New Year’s Eve.” Robert De Niro would be a bitter, dying man, while Michelle Pfeiffer would be “a frustrated executive secretary who decides to tackle her unfulfilled resolutions.” Hilary Swank would be a producer of the big Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration, while Ashton Kutcher would be cast well against type as a man who hates New Year’s Eve.
This quartet would join Lea Michele and Abigail Breslin, and there will be more to come before the film shoots in mid-December. Garry Marshall is directing.
