Annabelle Creation Review

(This review originally ran following an early screening at Comic-Con. Annabelle: Creation is in theaters today.)

While sequels tend to have trouble measuring up to the originals, in the horror world, there are plenty of occasions in which a follow-up, no matter how deep into the franchise fans have gone, turns out to be a surprisingly satisfying entry into its canon. In the case of Annabelle: Creation, we’re handed a sequel that runs circles around the original, both as a quality film and as a gruesome, terrifying piece of horror storytelling.

Annabelle: Creation Clips

We’re still a couple months out from Halloween, but the folks at Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line want to get the scares started early by expanding The Conjuring cinematic universe.

Annabelle revealed more of the story behind a possessed doll that was first introduced in The Conjuring in 2013, but it wasn’t quite up to snuff with the kind of terror that director James Wan had delivered before. Maybe that’s because the spin-off was rushed into production after the success of The Conjuring, leaving little time for writer Gary Dauberman to craft a truly compelling and scary horror film. Thankfully, that’s not the case with the new prequel, Annabelle: Creation.

Thor Ragnarok Comic-Con Footage and Panel

Members of the /Film staff spent much of the past week in San Diego to cover Comic-Con 2017, the enormous convention that explores every single corner of the geek world (and surely you’ve heard of it and already knew that). We saw footage from Marvel’s upcoming movies, including Avengers: Infinity War. We were able to listen to Steven Spielberg talk about Ready Player One. We explored the world of Blade Runner 2049 in a special VR experience. We watched 7,000 people go totally nuts over the first trailer for Stranger Things season 2.

But that’s only the tip of the iceberg. We’ve compiled all of our Comic-Con coverage from the past week into one handy post, organized by category. So please: peruse and enjoy and get your fix.

Annabelle Creation Trailer

Because everything needs to be explained to death nowadays, we’re getting Annabelle: Creation, the origin story of the possessed doll that made its debut in The Conjuring before getting its own spin-off in 2014.

Continuing to expand the mythology of the supernatural, paranormal activity investigated by Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed (Patrick Wilson) Warren, Annabelle: Creation shows us how this creepy doll came to be possessed by some kind of evil spirit, tricking a couple grief stricken by the loss of their daughter to transfer a demon into the old fashioned toy. In an attempt to pay for their mistake, they shelter a group of orphan girls, one of who becomes the next target for Annabelle.

Annabelle Creation Trailer

Even though The Conjuring spin-off Annabelle showed us one of the earlier supernatural frights created by the doll that eventually ends up in the hands of paranormal investigators and demonologists Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed (Patrick Wilson) Warren, we still don’t know much about where the creepy toy came from. But we’ll find out late this summer.

Annabelle: Creation will take us back even further into the history of the possessed doll with Lights Out director David F. Sandberg bringing us the origin story of how this doll became evil and who it terrorized first.

Annabelle Teaser Trailer

2014’s Annabelle was no great shakes, trading the artfully crafted tension and atmosphere of The Conjuring for cheap scares lifted from other, better movies. But it did make a lot of money: $256 million, to be precise, which is all the more impressive when you realize it cost just $6.5 million to make. So of course there was going to be a sequel.

Annabelle 2 is directed by Swedish filmmaker David F. Sandberg, who just made his feature film debut with Lights OutMiranda OttoAnthony LaPaglia, and Stephanie Sigman star in the horror sequel, which has just revealed its first promo. Watch the Annabelle 2 teaser trailer below.  Read More »

James Wan Leaving Aquaman

We had a one-on-one interview with MacGyver pilot director and executive producer James Wan and showrunner Peter Lenkov before their Television Critics Association panel. In the time between the interview and panel, news broke that the villain of Wan’s Aquaman movie would be Black Manta. After the panel, I asked Wan about choosing Black Manta for the villain.

“I want to know where Wrap got that piece of news from,” Wan laughed. “Come on, I can’t talk about this.”   Read More »

annabelle 2 director

As one of the people who unapologetically enjoyed 2014’s Annabelle, I welcomed the news of a sequel with open arms. The original film is stylish, spooky, and yes, occasionally silly. It was a ton of fun and I stand by that assessment, Rotten Tomatoes score be damned! Yesterday, Warner Bros. announced that Annabelle 2 will hit theaters on May 19, 2017 and today, it’s been revealed that director David F. Sandberg has been recruited to helm the sequel.

annabelle 2

Annabelle was a pretty solid little horror movie whose greatest sin was being a spin-off of the far superior The Conjuring. It was also a massive hit, grossing $256 million worldwide against a budget of only $6.5 million. The fact that we’re getting news of a sequel now and not a year ago is shocking. The horror genre, after all, is no stranger to franchises that move at the speed of light and milk the goodwill of fans the world over. So congratulations on not being that, Annabelle 2.

For everything we know so far about the next adventure of that demonic doll, hit the jump.

‘The Conjuring’ Sequel Pushed to 2016 [Updated]

Conjuring 2 delayed

New Line had planned a Conjuring sequel for October 2015, but that plan has changed. Just weeks after the Conjuring spin-off Annabelle opened in the US, New Line has pulled The Conjuring 2 off the 3015 schedule, pushing it into 2016. The studio will still use that date for horror, and will release a different, as-yet untitled horror movie on the old Conjuring 2 date. Could this have anything to do with the good reception for Annabelle, which technically exists in the same series, but was a lot cheaper to make?  Read More »
