There’s a segment of the population that will always turn out to see a movie advertised as being “based on the novel by Stephenie Meyer,” no matter what, and another segment that will avoid that movie like the plague, no matter what. Meyer’s first non-Twilight tale, the sci-fi romance The Host, doesn’t look likely to change the minds of diehards in either group. But for the rest of the population, there’s a new trailer to help them make up their minds.
Saoirse Ronan stars as Melanie Stryder, a young woman living on an Earth that’s been taken over by aliens. When one of the invaders tries to take control of her mind, Melanie’s consciousness tries to fight back. Max Irons and Jake Abel play her two handsome suitors, and Diane Kruger the leader of the extraterrestrials. Andrew Niccol directs. Watch the new video after the jump.

The Twilight Saga is officially over — at least until Summit starts working on the inevitable reboot — but author Stephenie Meyer isn’t leaving the big screen just yet. Her first non-Twilight novel, The Host, is headed for cinemas next month, with Saoirse Ronan in the lead and Andrew Niccol at the helm.
Where the last trailer leaned heavily on the romance, no doubt in an effort to hook the same fans who turned out for Twilight, the new one aims for broader appeal by playing up the sci-fi action. Watch it after the jump.

Over the past five years, author Stephenie Meyer has proved she can strike a chord blending genre and romance. Her Twilight books and movies are some of the most successful in recent memory, playing to a specific audience hungry for passionate romance and tantalized by their horror-inspired roots.
Once Meyer finished Twilight, she published The Host, which has now been adapted for the big screen by Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, The Truman Show) and it’s more of that proven formula. Set in a future where most of the world has been taken over by parasitic alien beings, The Host follows a romantically involved survivor, played by Saoirse Ronan, whose human soul fights her alien parasite to help the human resistance against their alien invaders.
At least, that’s what the first trailer for the film showed. Now the final theatrical trailer has been released — likely meant to be attached to this weekend’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 — and it dials down the sci-fi alien action angle in place of sappy teen romance. The first full day of the San Diego Comic Con found the giant Hall H occupied by nearly the entire cast of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II, with Twilight author Stephenie Meyer showing up as well. But after the Twilight panel finished up, Meyer came back out to the stage to introduce a few minutes from The Host, which is the Andrew Niccol-scripted and directed adaptation of Meyer’s sci-fi novel of the same name.
The book follows a teen girl named Melanie Stryder, who is initially one of the few humans to escape possession by an alien race. But she is eventually “occupied” by a symbiotic alien named Wanderer, and the story kicks into gear as Melanie and Wanderer fight for dominance within the girl’s mind, as human and alien-controlled factions have their own raging conflict.

Author Stephenie Meyer is obviously best known for writing the Twilight books, but she also wrote a best-seller not filled with vampires, werewolves and teen lust. It’s called The Host and the film version, directed by Andrew Niccol, has just released its first teaser trailer. Starring Saoirse Ronan, The Host is about one woman’s struggle in world where aliens have fused themselves with the majority of humans to create an ideal society. Although this November’s Breaking Dawn Part 2 is the last film currently planned in The Twilight Saga, Stephenie Meyer will be back at the box office again just four months later, with March’s The Host. The adaptation of Meyer’s first non-Twilight novel has been in the works for a couple of years now, and picked up steam last year when Saoirse Ronan and Andrew Niccol (In Time) signed on to star and direct, respectively. Max Irons, Jake Abel, and William Hurt joined a few months later, and now Inglourious Basterds actress Diane Kruger has been announced as the latest addition to the cast. More details after the jump.

William Hurt is the latest addition to The Host, the adaptation of Twilight author Stephenie Meyer‘s sci-fi romance that will be directed by Andrew Niccol (In Time, Gattaca). The actor is in talks to play Jeb, “eccentric uncle” to Saoirse Ronan‘s character Melanie. Ronan’s character has her mind taken over by an alien intelligence called Wanderer as part of an invasion. But Melanie fights off Wanderer’s dominance, and the girl’s love for a boy named Jared (Max Irons) ends up infecting the alien.
Jake Abel will play another character named Ian, who has his own feelings for Wanderer. In addition to being Melanie’s uncle, Jeb is a leader of the human resistance to the alien effort. The Host will be released on March 29, 2013. [EW]

Hot off two of the year’s most buzzed-about performances in Albert Nobbs and Martha Marcy May Marlene, Glenn Close and Elizabeth Olsen have signed on to star in Thérèse Raquin. Charlie Stratton is writing and directing the erotic thriller, which is based on a 19th century novel and play by Émile Zola. Olsen will lead the cast as the titular young woman, who’s pushed into an unhappy marriage by her overbearing aunt (Close). Thérèse eventually falls into a passionate affair with her husband’s friend Laurent, with destructive consequences for all involved.
Close has reportedly been attached to the film for years, though Olsen’s involvement appears to be a recent development. Thérèse Raquin is scheduled to begin shooting this spring. [Entertainment Weekly]
