It’s no coincidence that the official website for author Isaac Marion includes glowing blurbs from both Stephenie Meyer and Simon Pegg. Marion’s novel Warm Bodies, and Jonathan Levine‘s film adaptation of same, owes as much to Twilight as it does Shaun of the Dead. It attempts to infuse some self-aware humor into a tale of star-crossed inter-species romance. Ultimately, however, the combination turns out to be less than the sum of its parts.

There’s a short new trailer for Warm Bodies, the zombie romantic comedy from director Jonathan Levine (50/50, The Wackness), starring Nicholas Hoult as a zombie who falls for a human girl (Teresa Palmer). It’s the classic wrong side of the tracks romantic setup, complete with the girl’s father (John Malkovich) being a guy who is opposed — really, violently opposed — to the idea of their relationship.
Malkovich gets a bit more play in this trailer, which, despite being only one minute long, is probably more effective than the first longer spot for the film was. Read More »

Throughout the ’90s, Whit Stillman could be counted on for his wry depictions of the American upper class, inspiring the likes of Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach. But he took a break from filmmaking after 1998′s The Last Days of Disco, and it’s only now that he’s returning to the silver screen with Damsels in Distress.
Greta Gerwig stars as the leader of a clique of college girls trying to change “the atmosphere of male barbarism” at their preppy East Coast school. Analeigh Tipton (Crazy, Stupid, Love.) and Adam Brody also star, but I’m just as excited for the supporting performances from comedic actors like Alia Shawkat, Aubrey Plaza, and Zach Woods. Watch the trailer after the jump.

The last film by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, I Love You, Phillip Morris, took quite a winding path to get to theaters in the US. But their follow-up, a romantic comedy called Crazy, Stupid, Love, was made with Warner Bros. and is already set to release this summer. The film stars Steve Carell as a 40-something guy whose relationship with his wife (Julianne Moore) disintegrates, leading him to seek image rehab advice from lothario Ryan Gosling.
The trailer is out now, and it lurks just after the break. Read More »

The Steve Carell / Ryan Gosling comedy that may or may not be called Crazy, Stupid Love is quickly adding actors. I Love You, Philip Morris directors John Requa and Glen Ficarra have already nabbed Emma Stone and Julianne Moore, and now they’re bringing in ex-figure skater Analeigh Tipton. She’s been part of America’s Next Top Model and will be seen in The Green Hornet later this year.
Film has Carell and Moore as a married couple who start divorce proceedings when she confesses an affair. Depressed, Carell meets Gosling’s character, who offers to help him get back in the game with women. Meanwhile, Carell’s son is in love with his babysitter (Tipton), who has a thing for Carell. Meanwhile, Gosling has struck out with Emma Stone, who eventually factors back into the story. [Variety]
