Cooties cast

If the idea of a bunch of zombie kids disemboweling their teachers sounds like fun, Cooties is the movie for you. Elijah Wood stars as Clint, a substitute teacher who ends up at the wrong school on the wrong day. He’s joined by Allison Pill, Rainn Wilson, Jack McBrayer, Nasim Pedrad and Leigh Whannell, all of whom play teachers tasked with trying to stop a quickly spreading virus that turns kids into rabid flesh eaters.

Whannell, best known for the Saw and Insidious franchises, also co-wrote the film and it pops with hilarious one-liners and disgusting violence. The second act slows down the action considerably, however, and some of the plot holes are massive, but that doesn’t take away too much from the good provided by first time directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion. In the past few weeks, biopics have been the source of the weirdest casting news. Ashton Kutcher is playing Steve Jobs, and Jane Fonda is playing Nancy Reagan. Now a casting choice that seemed like a PR stunt when first mentioned — Lindsay Lohan playing Elizabeth Taylor in a Lifetime movie — has come to pass, while Taylor Swift is said to be lining up to play folk and feminist icon Joni Mitchell.

On the other side of casting news, Malin Akerman is doubtful that she’ll really get the chance to play a different feminist icon, one-time porn star Linda Lovelace, in Inferno. And Eric Bana is no longer attached to play Elvis.  Read More »

A few weeks ago I got news of a pretty cool little project: as part of the promotional efforts for Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Universal approached [adult swim] about making something related to the film. The idea concocted by the folks at the network was to animate a piece of one of Bryan Lee O’Malley‘s graphic novels that didn’t end up in Edgar Wright‘s movie.

Universal, Wright and O’Malley all got behind the idea, and the result is a four-minute animated short that illustrates the beginning of the friendship between Scott Pilgrim and Kim Pine. I got a look at the nearly-completed short during Comic Con, and now we can show you a clip from the finished project.

First Look: Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs the World

scott-pilgrim-cast-header-1

We’ve seen a lot of candid cast photos for Edgar Wright‘s upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, but until now we haven’t seen any actual stills from the film. Edgar Wright just blogged what appears to be the first official still blown up and framed.  But the wily director didn’t just throw the shot out to the world; he took the photo at an extreme angle that seeks to obscure it somewhat. Thanks to the magic of this photo reconstructing program I have on loan from the FBI (ok, it’s just Photoshop) you can get a great look at Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Johnny Simmons, Ellen Wong, Allison Pill and Mark Webber as they (I think) look disdainfully at a performance by a rival band.

Check the original photo and our ‘fixed’ version in embiggened size after the break. Read More »

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World has finally entered principal photography today and, true to form, the long lens brigade have cracked off a few snapshots of the cast. Canadian Tabloids have pictures of Michael Cera as Pilgrim, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee and Alison Pill as Kim Pine. None of them are actually in character in any of the shots (well, I’m guessing not – does Cera strike you as being method?) but they are in costume, with hair and makeup done and that’s the best we’ve been given yet. (Editor’s Note: The photos have been removed)

There’s a little look at each of them below the break (and I do mean little) as well as details of Dakota Fanning‘s apparent casting in the movie.
