The sequel to the massive hit Alice in Wonderland is now filming in England. Directed by James Bobin, the film is officially called Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, and in a press release a few new cast members have been revealed along with some plot details.
Alice 2 “revisits Lewis Carroll’s beloved stories with an all-new new tale that travels back to Underland—and back in Time.” We can now confirm Sacha Baron Cohen and Rhys Ifans have joined the massive returning cast, which includes Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Mia Wasikowska and voice performances by Stephen Fry, Toby Jones, Alan Rickman, Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall. With Disney’s Maleficent opening in theaters Friday, it’s the perfect time to remember that a new trend will continue. The trend: Disney reimagining its classic animated films in live action. Cinderella is out next year and then the one that started the revamp pattern, Alice in Wonderland, will get its sequel. Alice in Wonderland 2 will be called something like Alice: Through the Looking Glass. James Bobin (The Muppets) is directing and original stars Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska will return.
Rumors have run rampant that Sacha Baron Cohen could be playing a role and, apparently, they’re true. He’s also being joined by Rhys Ifans, who’ll be playing the father of Depp’s Mad Hatter. Read More »
Even if you take away his two Muppet movies, writer/director James Bobin is a guy you want to talk to. He helped shape Sacha Baron Cohen’s legendary Da Ali G Show and the HBO show Flight of the Conchords, and is helming the next Disney Alice in Wonderland film, Alice Through the Looking Glass. He also helped bring The Muppets back to the big screen in the 2012 hit and co-wrote and directed this week’s hilarious sequel, Muppets Most Wanted. This James Bobin fellow has it going pretty well.
We were lucky enough to speak to Bobin and discussed a myriad of topics. In addition to an Alice tease, we discussed the self-referential nature of Muppets Most Wanted, having to change elements of the story when songs have already been finished, the canon of the Muppets, the rules for shooting and working with the Muppets, action sequences, dance and much more.
