Coming-of-age indie narratives are a Sundance staple each year, and this year one of the most buzzed-about was Marielle Heller‘s The Diary of a Teenage Girl. Based on the novel by Phoebe Gloeckner, it stars Bel Powley as Minnie, a teenager growing up in 1970s San Francisco.
Minnie loses her virginity to a much older man (Alexander Skårsgard) who also happens to be dating her mom (Kristen Wiig), and her life only gets crazier and more complicated from there. Check out the first Diary of a Teenage Girl trailer after the jump. Read More »

Alexander Skarsgård has been teetering on the verge of movie stardom for a while now, but even as peers like Tom Hardy and Henry Cavill have found their way to comic book tentpoles, Skarsgård’s mostly been alternating between TV roles (Generation Kill, True Blood), indies (Disconnect, What Maisie Knew), and supporting parts in higher-profile pics (Battleship). Not a bad path, but not quite the A-list career his fans have been predicting.
That may be about to change, though. Skarsgård is reportedly the frontrunner to lead David Yates‘ Tarzan, WB’s long-gestating adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs‘ classic character. He could be starring alongside Samuel L. Jackson, who’s being considered for another key character. More details, including a plot description, after the jump.

Up to this point, Baz Luhrmann‘s been filling his 3D adaptation of The Great Gatsby with well-known talents: Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, and of course, Leonardo DiCaprio as the titular Gatsby. So it’s surprising and intriguing that the latest addition to his cast is a newcomer — Elizabeth Debicki, who comes straight out of Australia’s Victorian College of the Arts. Debicki will play golfer Jordan Baker, who in F. Scott Fitzgerald‘s classic novel is a friend of Daisy Buchanan (Mulligan) and the love interest of Nick Carraway (Maguire).
In an interview, Luhrmann acknowledged the unusual nature of his selection:
It was a surprising result, but Elizabeth’s grasp of the material and her chemical connectivity to Tobey Maguire, in addition to her striking, athletic appearance, had us in a place where we were fully confident and ready to take the leap of giving the role of Jordan Baker to what, I guess, people would term ‘a discovery’… We are thrilled.
The major characters yet to be cast is Daisy’s husband Tom Buchanan (Ben Affleck was in talks, but bowed out due to schedule conflicts). Isla Fisher has been in talks to play Tom’s mistress Myrtle Wilson. [Deadline]
After the jump, Katie Holmes and Chace Crawford find love, and Alexander Skarsgard signs on for a dramedy.

Nikkie Finke has been on a roll regarding news from the world of Marvel, which makes me think she has a good inside source. Today she posted a bunch of casting tidbits for Kenneth Branagh‘s Thor. First up is Thor himself. Finke gives a list of actors who have tested for the role, including Josh Hartnett, Charlie Hunnam (Sons Of Anarchy), Tom Hiddleston (The Gathering Storm), Liam Hemsworth (The Expendables), Joel Kinnaman and the previously rumored Alexandar Skarsgard.
But the big shocker is that Natalie Portman will be playing the lead female role. Possibilities after the jump.
