Many fans consider 2012 to be one of the best years for film in a long time. We’ve had great popcorn movies, huge epics, mind-melting indies and new films from some of the best filmmakers around. But every year has some stinkers and as good as 2012 has been, it’s probably been equally as bad too.

Ever since Tyler Perry was first cast as Alex Cross in Summit’s James Patterson franchise reboot, fans have understandably been pretty skeptical. Remember, this is a role once played by the great Morgan Freeman in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider. Any actor would have his work cut out for him following an act like that, but Perry in particular — who’s best known for his cross-dressing, comedic performances as Madea — seemed like an odd fit.

But the more optimistic among us were willing to give Perry the benefit of the doubt until we saw some footage, and now that the first trailer has hit we have a better idea of what Perry’s capable of in the part. The upcoming Alex Cross features the DC detective engaged in a cat-and-mouse game with Picass0 (a nearly unrecognizable Matthew Fox), a psychotic killer. Watch the trailer after the jump.

The film stars Tyler Perry, Matthew Fox, Jean Reno and others. Then we’ve got Taken 2, Olivier Megaton‘s sequel to the popular 2009 film starring Liam Neeson and Maggie Grace. Finally, Will Ferrell and Zack Galifianakis pop up in two new campaign themed posters for The Campaign, the comedy directed by Jay Roach. Holy crap, look at Matthew Fox! The Lost star plays a serial killer in Alex Cross, the Rob Cohen-directed adaptation of James Patterson‘s novel I, Alex Cross. In the title role is Tyler Perry, in a rare gig outside of his own filmmaking oeuvre. He’s taking over for Morgan Freeman, who played Cross in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider.

The first images from Alex Cross have shown up today, and while it’s neat to see Perry out of his Madea getup, it’s really Fox that steals the spotlight here. Because, at the risk of repeating myself, holy crap. He’s really Christian Bale-ing here. More images are below. Read More »

With just days to go until This Means War was scheduled to hit theaters, Fox has shifted its release date yet again. Less last-minute is Summit’s announcement of a fall release date for Alex Cross (formerly I, Alex Cross), which sees Tyler Perry ditching the Madea costume for once. But the biggest piece of news, which remains unconfirmed at the moment, is a possible 2013 release date for The Wolverine. Hit the jump for details on all three pictures. (Update: Fox just confirmed with us that the release date for The Wolverine is legit.)
