With Slamdance and Sundance happening concurrently, Park City is going to be the place to be for fans of indie cinema for the next two weeks. One of the most intriguing titles set to debut at the former is Director’s Cut, Adam Rifkin‘s very meta horror movie starring Penn Jillette.
A crowdsourced movie about a crowdsourced movie gone awry, Director’s Cut centers on Herbert Blount (Jillette), an unhinged cineaste who decides to take over control of a film project he helped fund. He kidnaps the lead actress (Missi Pyle) and forces her to act out the scenes he’s written, while her co-stars (Harry Hamlin and Hayes MacArthur) wonder about her disappearance. Just when you think you’ve heard it all, someone decides to make a Peeps movie. Yes, that’s Peeps as in those sugary marshmallow confections that crop up in drugstores everywhere around Easter.
The specific “someone” in this case is Adam Rifkin, director of Detroit Rock City, who has just optioned the film and TV rights to the candies. There’s no word yet on what the small-screen plans are, but the film is described as an animated “Lego Movie-esque family epic.” Hit the jump to learn more about Peeps’ journey to the screen.

I can imagine a writer standing in the big office of a studio executive’s office. He pitches this idea for a comedy where Cavemen who yearns for more out of life than sticks, stones and raw meat. It could be a good movie, right? Wrong.
Homo Erectus is directed by Adam Rifkin and stars Adam Rifkin, Ali Larter, David Carradine, Talia Shire, Hayes MacArthur, Gary Busey, Tom Arnold, Giuseppe Anddrews, Miles Dougal, Ron Jeremy and Carol Alt.
