As we promised in “The Ones Who Knock” Kickstarter, I will be doing weekly recaps here for each episode of Breaking Bad. For those of you unfamiliar with my recapping style, it’s less of a straightforward plot summary and more a distillation of the most interesting elements of each week’s episode.  The recaps will spoil everything up through the current episode (S5E14 “Ozymandias”), but won’t spoil any future episodes or even scenes from the “Next Time” segment of the show.  There will, however, be some light speculation and straight-up crackpot theories.  No theory or speculation is based on foreknowledge of the show.  So hold on to your pork pie hats, because here we go. Thirty-odd years after Ridley Scott cast Sigourney Weaver in Alien, and two decades after they reunited in 1492: Conquest of Paradise, the pair are re-teaming once again for Exodus. Weaver has boarded the Biblical epic, along with John Turturro, Aaron Paul, and Ben Kingsley.

Breaking Bad Season 5 - Walt and Jesse

Unless you’ve been living under a rock that doesn’t get WiFi service, you no doubt already know that AMC’s Breaking Bad returned this past weekend for its final eight-episode stretch. The meth drama wasted no time, picking up just minutes, if not seconds, after last year’s “Gliding Over All” left off and barreling ahead through some major plot points.

But if you’ve taken your sweet time getting around to watching the show, now’s your chance. The network has put the entire season premiere “Blood Money” online for free, so you don’t even need a cable subscription to watch it. And once you’re done with that, you can review the plausibility of Walt’s various tricks in Mythbusters‘ “Breaking Bad Special,” which has also made its way online. Watch both videos after the jump.

Breaking Bad Pilot Bryan Cranston

“If you’re a writer tonight, you might want to hide your knives,” said Jason Reitman at Tuesday night’s special summer live read. “This script is so good you’ll never want to write again. You f***er, Vince.”

The script Reitman was referring to, the script that could get the writer/director to come back and do a live read in July when he’s not scheduled to come back until October, was the pilot of AMC’s Breaking Bad. The “Vince” is creator Vince Gilligan. And as fantastic the first episode of Breaking Bad is to watch, to hear it read reveals another level of brilliance. If you were to travel back in time, sit down with Gilligan in 2007 and ask him to describe what happens in the show over a few beers, that’s what his writing sounds like. It’s perfectly, brilliantly descriptive with a language that’s filled with vulgarity and humor. It has a conversational, culturally current tone that pops off the page.

The latest live read at the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art, presented by Film Independent, revealed not only this fantastic writing, but some fun interpretations by great actors, appearances by the original actors, deleted scenes and more. Read about it below. Read More »
