a wrinkle in time early buzz

A Wrinkle in Time has a lot of expectations riding on it. It is Ava Duvernay‘s ambitious passion project, the first non-documentary feature film that the director has tackled since Selma won acclaim and awards love four years ago. It’s an adaptation of a beloved children’s fantasy novel by Madeleine L’Engle. It has a black lead actress (Storm Reid) in a piece of colorblind casting that differs from the novel. And it’s starring some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Gugu Mbatha Raw, Zach Galifianakis, and Chris Pine.

So, does A Wrinkle in Time live up to those expectations? Not quite.

The social media embargo for Duvernay’s Disney film has lifted, and reactions are mixed at best and pessimistic at worst. Formal reviews don’t drop until March 7 — two days before the film’s release — but a few people who attended the premiere shared their opinions on the science-fiction movie.

a wrinkle in time trailer

If Oprah tells you to “have faith in who you are,” you darn well better.

13-year-old Meg Murry (Storm Reid) is a bit of an unconventional hero to set off on a quest spanning time and space, but aided by her gifted little brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe), her best friend Calvin (Levi Miller), and a trio of strange celestial beings (Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling), she has no choice to rise to the occasion. The new trailer for A Wrinkle in Time charts Meg’s cautious hero’s journey from school troublemaker to galaxy-gallivanting savior of her missing father. And it’s all set to an empowering — and kind of cheesy — pop song.

2018 Golden Globes Video Highlights

Last night, the 75th Golden Globe Awards aired on NBC, and while the night wasn’t particularly exciting, it was full of a handful of big firsts for the awards presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

To kick off the night, Seth Meyers delivered a monologue targeting all of the missteps by Hollywood in the wake of sexual assault allegations against a wide variety of producers, actors and more. After that, there were a few awards handed out to actors of color for the first time ever. It’s kind of crazy that’s still happening, but at least Hollywood is finally embracing diversity more across the board.

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay, the director of Selma and Middle of Nowhere, has a great grasp of drama that, arguably, not a lot of directors making $100 million movies possess. Her name on Disney’s adaptation of Madeline L’Engle‘s 1962 novel “A Wrinkle in Time” has us excited.
