Often when news revs up on a big video game to film adaptation, one question is at the forefront of the conversation: “what’s the story?” Now Sony is really moving forward on a movie version of Gran Turismo, the company’s very detailed racing franchise, which is perhaps one of the most story-free major game series out there. Now Sony has chosen Joseph Kosinski, the director of Oblivion and Tron: Legacy, to sit in the driver’s seat of the Gran Turismo movie. Read More »
Joseph Kosinski has been established as a sci-fi director thanks to Tron Legacy and Oblivion, his work on the Black Hole remake, and commercial work such as his recent Destiny spot. But he’s working to move in other directions, with non-sci-fi developments. One was the project Go Like Hell he and Tom Cruise were trying to put together, about the rivalry between Henry Ford II and Enzo Ferrari.
Now Kosinski has a new project, and it also steps away from the sci-fi angle. As with Go Like Hell, this one is based on a true story. In this case, the basis is an article by Evan Hughes that investigates the story of a 17-year old drug dealer who claimed also did work as an FBI informant. Universal just optioned The Trials of White Boy Rick and set Kosinski to direct. Read More »
Bungie and Activision are teaming for the “living game world” of the next-gen game title Destiny, and now Joseph Kosinski has directed a live-action ad/trailer for the game. While “live-action” might at first seem a bit generous in this context, as so much of the ad is CG, eventually you’ll see stunning environments pulled from real life. And there are definitely real human actors in there, wearing actual costumes — at least one of which looks like it might have been borrowed from Star-Lord’s wardrobe.
You’ll hear the voice of Peter Dinklage as Ghost, the game’s helper AI, and the stuff heard here has been nicely chosen, as it sounds a lot better than the early snippets of his voice work that drew criticism for a flat affect. The improved audio, together with Led Zeppelin’s ‘Immigrant Song,’ keeps things moving here. Read More »
Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise did a movie together when Cruise was an established superstar and Pitt was just starting out, but 1994’s Interview With a Vampire didn’t quite become a classic of the vampire genre. Now, after twenty years, they may re-team for a story grounded in reality, and which has been in development for a few years with both actors attached at different times. Read More »
Cool Posts From Around the Web:
We know that Tom Cruise likes to work with the same people multiple times if they get along, and evidently he liked his Oblivion gig with director Joseph Kosinski. The two are going to develop another film together.
In this case the movie is Go Like Hell, set in the ’60s and based on the book Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and their Battle For Speed and Glory at Le Mans by A.J. Baime. The story, as you might surmise from that long subtitle, is about the Le Mans rivalry between Henry Ford II and Enzo Ferrari; if this deal leads to a real film, Cruise would play Ford, who with Lee Iacocca and engineer Carroll Shelby designed a car to challenge Ferrari’s European dominance. Briefly: Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rodgers, writers of the upcoming AMC series Halt & Catch Fire, have written a new action-thriller script that now has Oblivion and Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski set to direct. In fact, Kosinski came up with the story, and then had the screenwriting pair flesh out the script. (Similar to the manner in which Oblivion was developed.) Read More »
Joseph Kosinski got a lot of attention with Tron Legacy and then took Tom Cruise into the future with Oblivion. He has been developing a remake of Disney’s The Black Hole, among other films, but now he’s signed on to a Warner Bros. picture that has been in development for a while.
