300 Rise of an Empire

Briefly: The RoboCop remake opens in two days, with showings starting Wednesday. (It has already opened in the UK.) Those who attend IMAX showings of the film will be treated to some marketing from Warner Bros., which is packaging an extended look at 300: Rise of an Empire with the biggest-screen outings of RoboCop. How you’ll feel about this naturally depends on the reaction you’ve already had to the many trailers for the 300 sequel; Warner Bros. is obviously banking on the idea that seeing some of 300 on the country’s biggest screens will be a good sales pitch.

Jose Padilha directed RoboCop, which stars Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael K. Williams, Jay Baruchel, Jennifer Ehle and Marianne Jean-Baptiste. 300: Rise of an Empire is from director Noam Murro, with a cast that features Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Callan Mulvey, Hans Matheson, Lena Headey and Rodrigo Santoro.

300 Rise of Empire soldiers

Zack Snyder’s massive hit 300 was released in 2006. Though its sequel didn’t start production at that time, it kind of feels like it did. Very early casting announcements and multiple title changes have made it seem like we’ve been hearing about 300: Rise of an Empire for years.

All that can now be put aside, because on March 7 Noam Murro‘s sequel starring Sullivan Stapleton, Eva Green, Callan Mulvey, Hans Matheson, Lena Headey and Rodrigo Santoro is finally hitting the big screen. The film borrows many of the distinct visual techniques Snyder used almost a decade ago, but with updated technology and a broader scope.

You can learn more about that and more in a new behind the scenes video released by Warner Bros. Check it out below. Read More »

300 Rise of an Empire

Early in the latest trailer for 300: Rise of an Empire, Eva Green‘s Artemisia hisses something about “the ecstasy of steel, flesh, sweat and muscle, rage… war.” The context of the line isn’t quite clear, but from here it seems to work just fine as a mission statement for the film as a whole. Like the original 300, Rise of an Empire seems to be all about the glory of the battlefield.

Set concurrently, more or less, with the events of 300, the follow-up stars Sullivan Stapleton as a general who wants to unite Greece against the invading Persian forces led by Artemisia and Xerxes the god-king (Rodrigo Santoro). The fights are set at sea this time around, and King Leonidas appears only as a corpse, but otherwise 300: Rise of an Empire seems to deliver more of the same for fans of the first. Watch the newest trailer after the jump.
