Villain Star Wars Force Awakens header

The Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer had everyone talking about the new baddie (and possible Sith lord) Kylo Ren’s lightsaber which featured a laser sword cross-guard. Some have argued about the practicalness of this new design, but most people think its cool regardless. And now we learn another radically different unconventional lightsaber design is about to be revealed in the Star Wars universe, but not on the big screen.

The unconventional new lightsaber design will debut on Disney XD’s animated series Star Wars Rebels. And no, I’m not talking about The Inquisitor’s double-bladed spinning lightsaber which premiered earlier in the season — I’m talking about an all new design we have yet to see. For those who don’t want to wait, check out the concept art after the jump along with all of the details on the new Star Wars Rebels lightsaber.

Ezra’s Star Wars Rebels Lightsaber

JediNews posted an image from the latest edition of Star Wars Insider magazine (Issue #154, page 35) revealing Ezra’s new multi-function lightsaber design:

Thats right, Ezra’s custom built lightsaber will also have a multi-function design which will allow him to disengage his lightsaber and use the hilt to fire stun blasts at an opponent. Sounds like a cool custom improvement, not one that would sit well with Jedi elders, but these are different times and a new generation of Jedi are learning to make the force their own. Kind of a powerful idea if you really think about it.

While we do have confirmation that the teaser trailer ends with the sound of Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber (which all but confirms its appearance in the film), we don’t know if any other lightsabers will be seen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Ezra’s new lightsaber also poses the question of will we see other force sensitive create and modify their own lightsabers in Star Wars Rebels and the upcoming big screen Star Wars sequels and spinoff movies? I’m betting this is only the first of many new lightsaber designs we will see over the next decade of films and television series.

Update: LatinoReview has some images from the toy version, which has been released:
