George Lucas got out in front of press this week to promote his new film Strange Magic, which is based on a Lucas story and can potentially be seen as the last of the Lucas-involved Lucasfilm projects. Before selling Lucasfilm to Disney, George Lucas had planned to oversee the seventh Star Wars movie, and the early starting point for Star Wars: The Force Awakens was a set of outlines he had written prior to the sale of his company.

But now that The Force Awakens is firmly in the hands of J.J. Abrams, Lucas says he has seen the film’s trailer, but doesn’t have any idea what the new story is. In short, the Star Wars creator doesn’t know any more about the new movie than the rest of us do.

Speaking to Screen Rant, Lucas says:

I haven’t seen anything; I mean I saw the trailer, it looks great, it looks interesting. But as I’ve said before: one thing I regret about Star Wars is that I never got to see it, you know? I never got to be blown away by the big ship coming over the thing, or anything. But this time I’m going to be, because I have no idea what they’re doing.

Lucas has something more interesting to reveal to the LA Times, as the filmmaker says he’s writing two new films right now. These aren’t Star Wars movies, or anything that fits into what he’s done in the recent past. No, these are “both experimental movies that hearken back to his student days at the University of Southern California.”

But they’re not movies that he’ll ever release, saying there’s no money in it.

The way [the films] are, they’re not really movies that can be released. They’re movies more for myself and maybe I’ll show them to some of my friends. … It costs more to put them out there than it does to make ‘em. These are movies that are never going to make any money or anything. … They’re like things I did in school or movies I produced, like ‘Koyaanisqatsi,’ ‘Powaqqatsi,’ things like that. But it’s different because they’re dramatic films. It’s very hard to explain because it’s never been done yet.

He says he doesn’t have a concrete plan in place to start shooting these movies, and so they remain at some point on the horizon.
