Sean Penn is one of those actors that can star in any movie he wants. He’s got enough clout that, if he wants to star in anything from Secretariat to Saw, he can. However, it’s precisely because he doesn’t do that that we go to see his movies. We know that when Sean Penn picks a project, it’s a good one. That luxury is the reason we should reserve judgment when looking at the photos from the set of his new movie. Penn is currently shooting This Must Be The Place in the Diamond District of New York City with director Paolo Sorrentino (Il Divo) where he stars as a “bored, retired rock star sets out to find his father’s executioner, an ex-Nazi war criminal who is a refugee in the U.S.,” according to the IMDB. Hit the jump for more on the project and even more photos from the set.

We posted a first look of Penn in this role a few months ago, but these photos from Just Jared, are much more detailed and plentiful. Check out a few of them below and the rest of them over at Just Jared.

There’s a longer plot description of the film, which also stars Frances McDormand, Harry Dean Stanton and Judd Hirsch, on the IMDB page, but since it was written by “Anonymous,” take it with a grain of salt.

Cheyenne, a wealthy former rock star (Penn), now bored and jaded in his retirement embarks on a quest to find his father’s persecutor, an ex-Nazi war criminal now hiding out in the U.S. Learning his father is close to death, he travels to New York in the hope of being reconciled with him during his final hours, only to arrive too late. Having been estranged for over 30 years, it is only now in death that he learns the true extent of his father’s humiliation in Auschwitz at the hands of former SS Officer Aloise Muller – an event he is determined to avenge. So begins a life-altering journey across the heartland of America to track down and confront his father’s nemesis. As his quest unfolds, Cheyenne is reawakened by the people he encounters and his journey is transformed into one of reconciliation and self discovery. As his date with destiny arrives and he tracks down Muller, Cheyenne must finally decide if it is redemption he seeks

Penn will next be seen in the surprisingly excellent Fair Game by Doug Liman, which is out in limited release November 5 limited and wide release November 19 and then in Terrence Malik’s The Tree of Life on May 27, 2011.

What do you think of these photos and that description? Is this a movie you’re excited about?
