Doctor Who isn’t the only big geek property that is the subject of rumor today. Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (and the likely Amazing Spider-Man 3) and James Gunn‘s Guardians of the Galaxy are both the subject of rumor, with each specifically talking about a villainous character. The Spidey rumors are more likely to be substantial reveals than the Guardians one, but both remain unconfirmed at this point.

We’ll keep all the actual detailed talk until after the break, to prevent those who don’t want to be spoiled from learning anything.

First up, let’s hit The Amazing Spider-Man 2. For months there has been talk of this second film building up to an appearance from the villainous super-team The Sinister Six in the third film. After all, you put Rhino and Electro in the same film, with a potential Green Goblin appearance in a world with the Lizard running around, and that’s got to be the idea, right?

The Sinister Six talk continues now, but there’s a specific new bit of detail bolstering the rumor. Colm Feore has been cast in the film for a while, and now reports are that he’s playing a guy named Adrian Toomes. For those not steeped in Spidey lore, the alter-ego of Toomes is the Vulture, aka one of the very first Spider-Man villains. He appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #2. (The comic, not the film. But hey, nice coincidence.)

We know that Electro and Rhino are in costume, in this sequel, and there’s a good chance that we won’t see Vulture suit up until the third film. But with Sony planning a trilogy of Spider-Man films, it’s a good bet that the idea is for all those bad guys to add up to more than just a way to sell as many toys as possible. [Comic Book Movie]

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 features Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Shailene WoodleyColm FeoreSally Field and Chris Cooper. It opens on May 2, 2014.

The next rumor concerns Guardians of the Galaxy, and it is a bit more wild. It says that Karen Gillan, recently imported from Doctor Who to Guardians, will play a character named Angela. That would be a surprising thing, as the flame-haired, metal-bikini’d Angela wasn’t even part of the Marvel Universe until this year. A Scottish newspaper, seen via NeoGAF and Screen Rant, makes the claim about the role.

Angela was created by Neil Gaiman for Todd McFarlane’s Spawn series, and later became a point of legal contention in a battle between Gaiman and McFarlane. That battle was resolved and Angela is making the leap to the Marvel Universe, with her first Marvel appearance reportedly set for the end of this summer’s Age of Ultron storyline. From there, Angela is said to be set for a new Guardians of the Galaxy comic series, meant to tie in with the release of the film. Does that mean that James Gunn and his producers at Marvel have written her into the film? At this point we don’t know, and quick inquiries have turned up no confirmation.

Guardians of the Galaxy features Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Glenn Close and John C. Reilly. It opens August 1, 2014.
