For some time now, Paul Weitz has been attached to direct Another Night in Suck City, based on Nick Flynn‘s 2004 memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City. The last time we heard about the film was a year ago, when a report about Robert De Niro casually mentioned that he was attached to a role in the film. It’s been quiet on the Suck City front since then, but now Paul Dano is reportedly attached, too, for the role once meant for Casey Affleck.
The Wrap says it has confirmed the participation of Paul Dano in the film, which would likely see the actor playing essentially author Nick Flynn, with Robert De Niro playing his father. The memoir talks about the authors time working at a homeless shelter in Boston, where he found himself reunited with his homeless, alcoholic father.
Quite a pair of roles for Dano and De Niro; seeing the latter play a part that would require what this part does would be a refreshing thing. Paul Weitz wrote the script for the film, and I’m not sure how to predict the outcome there, but this is such a potentially strong core cast that optimism is probably warranted.
Flynn’s wayward father, a self-styled writer and ex-con, describes his life on Boston’s streets as “another bullshit night in Suck City”: he hangs out in ATM lobbies, stuffs his coat with newspaper and is often “still drunk from the night before.” This biting memoir describes the years poet Flynn spent, in his late 20s, working at one of the city’s homeless shelters, where his path crisscrossed with his down-and-out father’s. In examining their troublesome relationship, Flynn admits to feeling lost, as he turned to alcohol and came close to being on the other side of the shelter admissions booth himself.
