Channing Tatum in Talks for Roland Emmerich’s ‘White House Down’
Posted on Tuesday, May 15th, 2012 by Angie Han
Even as Mitt Romney and Barack Obama race to win the White House, Roland Emmerich and Antoine Fuqua are competing to take it down. Both filmmakers are signed on to direct projects described as “Die Hard on Pennsylvania Avenue” — Columbia’s White House Down for Emmerich, and Millennium’s Olympus Has Fallen for Fuqua. While Fuqua’s film has had Gerard Butler attached for a couple of months now, Emmerich has just cast Channing Tatum, who’s just coming off of three films and has two more due out this year. More details after the jump.
Olly Moss’ Pop Culture Paper Cuts To Become A Book In October
Posted on Tuesday, May 15th, 2012 by Germain Lussier

One year ago this week, the pop culture art game changed when Olly Moss opened his Paper Cuts show at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles. Up till then, Mondo posters were popular, people liked cool art, but Moss’ show was a genuine happening that garnered a line 24 hours in advance, featured several famous attendees and gave pop culture art a level of legitimacy it was sorely lacking. Today the pieces sell for thousands of dollars, if you can find someone willing to sell.
At the time, we covered the event extensively, providing the only interview with Moss at the show as well as a gallery of the images and a cool video that gave a sense of what it was all like. This October, Titan Books (who are also publishing the awesome Scott C Great Showdowns book) is bring it home to you. They’ll release a book of Moss’ paper cuts called Silhouettes From Popular Culture. The cover is above. After the jump read the official write up and see a gallery of what can be expected in the book.

I really wish that Mystery Men was a better movie. Released in 1999, Kinka Usher‘s loose adaptation of some of the comics of Bob Burden is a great example of where the comic book movie was in the days immediately after the release of Joel Schumacher’s Batman movies and before X-Men helped turn around the cinematic profile of comic book stories.
Which is to say: it is broad, weird, over-stylized and neither totally stupid nor particularly smart. It has a better cast than you’d expect (Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy,, Janeane Garofalo, Eddie Izzard, Paul Reubens, Geoffrey Rush, Claire Forlani, Tom Waits) and some definite highlights as a set of misfit heroes assemble a funhouse Avengers to rescue another hero.
The film also has one weird thing that few people in 1999 would have noticed, but which is a lot more attention-getting now: a super-brief cameo from director Michael Bay. Read More »

May is a big month in the world of Star Wars. There’s the “May the 4th Be With You,” the anniversary of the release of every single film in the saga, as well as the birthday creator George Lucas‘ birthday which is actually today, May 14. Happy birthday George!
It’s also the kick-off of Star Wars Weekends at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and besides the awesome Carbon Freeze thing they’ve got going on, Disney has released some truly cool ads for the summer long event taking place every Friday through Sunday from May 18 through June 10.
That’s just one example above. After the jump, check out seven more, some videos and read an amazing story of what George Lucas has been up to. Read More »
Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Gravity’ Pushed To 2013; ‘Gangster Squad’ Coming In September
Posted on Tuesday, May 15th, 2012 by Germain Lussier

One of the most anticipated films of 2012 has officially been delayed. Alfonso Cuaron‘s Gravity, originally set for release in November, has been moved to a not-yet-specified date in 2013. The film, which stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, recently began test screening and it’s safe to assume Cuaron and the Warner Bros. executives felt it needed a bit more time to reach its full potential. The sci-fi thriller is said to be very effects heavy.
As one Warner Bros. film goes into release limbo, another has come out. Ruben Fleischer‘s period film Gangster Squad has been slotted for September 7. Starring Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling, the film was moved off the schedule a few weeks back but, with a strong response to its recently released trailer, is now back on. Read More »
‘Chronicle’ Test Footage Shows the Film’s Proof of Concept
Posted on Tuesday, May 15th, 2012 by Russ Fischer

Chronicle was a nice little surprise early this year, and the film is hitting Blu-ray and DVD this week. I’d recommend checking out Josh Trank‘s found-footage ‘kids with powers’ movie, as it is one of the better superhero films out there, packed with the spirit of early Marvel comics and Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira, to boot. Plus, it has a good performance from Dane DeHaan as a kid who can’t quite handle his new power.
One of the bonus clips on the Blu-ray is a bit of test footage introduced by Trank. The director explains how Fox head honcho Tom Rothman wanted a test scene from the movie as a proof of concept, and goes on to show the scene interspersed with some commentary on how the effects were done. It’s a good compliment to an earlier video showing the origin of the film’s effects. Read More »
