Peter and Bobby Farrelly have returned with a new comedy, Hall Pass. The title refers to the pass that is given to characters played by Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis by their wives. They get one week of free play (with other women) with no consequences. Watch the trailer after the break.
I don’t know if emulating the films of Judd Apatow and Todd Phillips was conscious or not, or if this trailer has just been cut to make the film have the feel of those guys. But based on this Hall Pass only partially feels like a Farrelly Brothers movie. The hot/not scene with Richard Jenkins really feels like a Farrelly gag, but there’s a lot of Apatow and Phillips here. (By the way: Richard Jenkins looks like the man to beat here.)
And do you think they asked Patton Oswalt about borrowing the chloroform gag? Not like he’s the only one to ever use that, but in the last few years that joke is pretty definitively his. (Maybe he did uncredited rewrite work.)
Dig the supporting cast, though. In addition to Richard Jenkins it looks like Stephen Merchant and J.B. Smoove get good moments, and since Jenna Fischer and Christina Applegate get their own hall pass, hopefully they have their own moments as well.
Here’s the synopsis via Apple, which also has the trailer in HD.
Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis) are best friends who have a lot in common, including the fact that they have each been married for many years. But when the two men begin to show signs of restlessness at home, their wives (Jenna Fischer, Christina Applegate) take a bold approach to revitalizing their individual marriages: granting them a “hall pass,” one week of freedom to do whatever they want…no questions asked. At first, it sounds like a dream come true for Rick and Fred. But it isn’t long before they discover that their expectations of the single life-and themselves-are completely, and hilariously, out of sync with reality.
Hall Pass was written by Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly, Pete Jones, Kevin Barnett and directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly. It stars Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, Jenna Fischer, Richard Jenkins, J.B.
