Maria Bamford in Benched

While we wait for Netflix and Mitch Hurwitz to deliver another season of Arrested Development, they’ve got a little something else brewing with Arrested Development co-star Maria Bamford. Netflix has just picked up Lady Dynamite, a new original series executive produced by Hurwitz and starring Bamford. Get all the details on the Maria Bamford Netflix comedy after the jump.

THR reports Netflix has ordered 13 episodes of Lady Dynamite. The half-hour single-camera comedy will be “based on what Bamford has accepted to be ‘her life.'” The “occasionally surreal” series will cover various periods from Bamford’s life to tell the tale of “a woman who loses — and then finds — her s**t.”

Pam Brady will serve as showrunner. She wrote the pilot with Bamford and both will executive produce with Hurwitz. Brady is best known for her work on South Park. Her other credits include Just Shoot Me!, The Loop, and Neighbors From Hell.

Bamford appeared in Arrested Development Season 4 as recovering addict / Tobias Fünke love interest DeBrie Bardeaux. She’s coming off of a recurring role on the short-lived USA comedy Benched, and has done voice work for shows like The Legend of Korra and Adventure Time.

In addition, Bamford is one of the most acclaimed standup comedians working today. Her eccentric humor walks a fine line between hilarious and heartbreaking, and she often tackles deeply personal, uncomfortable topics like mental illness in her act. Lady Dynamite promises to be a unique addition to Netflix’s existing comedy slate which also includes Orange Is the New Black and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

Hurwitz signed a multiyear deal with Netflix last year to develop new shows for the company. Besides Lady Dynamite, he’s also executive producing Flaked, an upcoming comedy series starring Arrested Development‘s Will Arnett.

And speaking of Arrested Development, Hurwitz is expected to return for the fifth season. While Netflix hasn’t formally announced more episodes of the sitcom cult hit, producer Brian Grazer recently revealed that the plan was to shoot Season 5 in January or February for release sometime next year.
