It probably won’t be long now before Disney formally announces the new director of Star Wars Episode VII, but until then we’re going to continue with the process of elimination. Last week, Guillermo del Toro revealed that he most definitely would not be taking over at the helm. Today, we can also cross Joss Whedon off the list of possibilities.
Disappointing as that is, we have to admit his reason for not pursuing the job is sound — he’s just too busy with The Avengers 2 and S.H.I.E.L.D. Read his quotes after the jump
Whedon revealed in an interview with CNN that he was initially interested in the Star Wars job. Then he realized, to his regret, that he simply didn’t have the time. “I’m as angry as you should be,” he said.
When I heard that I was like, ‘I wonder… no, I really can’t do that. Oh, I already have a job.’ I wouldn’t clear the Avengers. I’m having so much fun with that sequel right now, just with the script, that I couldn’t imagine not doing it.
It doesn’t sound like Whedon was ever formally offered the job. But having already delivered one massive hit for Lucasfilm parent Disney, he might have been a strong contender had the timing been better. Given the fact that he can’t do both (at least, not without each film suffering as a result), though, sticking with mega-successful The Avengers franchise seems like a better choice.
Even though there’s no chance of Whedon directing Star Wars, he has plenty of opinions on what he’d like to see as a fan.
Oh I’ve got a lot of things. Where’s my list I’m carrying on me? But you know, I’d like to see a little edge. We all missed the Han [Solo] of it. It got very portentous, which was justified by the story, but I think we’d all like to see a little anarchy in the mix.
Well, we’ll always have Firefly‘s Mal Reynolds.
