news now

I’ve decided to consolidate a bunch of tv updates down to one posting, because, after-all this is still a movie blog.

LOST

The writers strike caused LOST to lose two hours of it’s planned fourth season. The show’s producers have announced that they will reclaim those hours in the show’s fifth and six season. That means that the finial two seasons of the hit show will now be 17 episodes in length instead of the planned 16 episode arcs. [THR]

Spaced

Nikki Finke is reporting that the American remake of Edgar Wright’s Spaced is a no-go. This should satisfy fans of the original British fanboy series starring Simon Pegg. For those of you who have never had a chance to watch the original Spaced, it finally comes to DVD in the states on July 22nd featuring new Exclusive Commentary By Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith, Bill Hader, Matt Stone, Patton Oswalt and Diablo Cody.

JJ Abrams

Fox has picked up JJ Abrams’s Fringe, which follows a young female FBI agent who tackle cases involving unexplained medical and scientific phenomena. Abrams’ Bad Robot produced a two-hour pilot which was written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Transformers, Star Trek) and directed by Alex Graves (Journeyman). The series’ cast includes Anna Torv, Mark Valley and Joshua Jackson. [Variety]

Heroes

And finally, NBC has started running a promo to promote Heroes Season 3. Watch it below.

Cool Stuff: No One Wants to Play Sega With Harrison Ford

Cool Stuff: No One Wants to Play Sega With Harrison FordBrandon Bird created this oil painting titled “No One Wants to Play Sega With Harrison Ford” on a 36” x 12” canvas for the I am 8-bit art show. You might be wondering how this is movie related, but with Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on the horizon, it isn’t hard to see a connection between the new film and Ford with an uninterested new generation sitting in the corner. Will young kids see the next Indy film, or would they rather play GTA4 or see Iron Man for a third time? And hey, it’s just funny.

Bird is selling limited prints of this great paining. Available in five different colors: Aqua, Tropical, Red, Yellow, and Grey. Each signed & numbered 22″ x 12″ print is available for $70.

These gallery-quality giclee art prints feature a level of detail and color reproduction far superior to what can be seen on the web. Each print is made on acid-free Velvet Fine Art paper using archival inks estimated to last 80 years under proper care (it is recommended prints be matted and framed under UV-resistant glass).

Speed Racer

Okay, so Speed Racer hit theaters nationwide today. Most movie critics are slamming The Wachowski Brother’s latest film (35% on Rotten Tomatoes). I actually had a lot of fun, but was left exhausted. I very much appreciated the cinematography and editing which made the movie look and feel like a live action anime, but felt the story was lacking. But enough about me…

I want to know what you thought of the movie. Leave your mini review in the comments below!

Here is a round up of stories that just didn’t make the /Film front page, or what we like to call…. Page 2!

Star Crash Movie Trailer

The Pitch: Apparently in 1979, New World Pictures producer Roger Corman picked up the film to see if the market was viable for a low budget space opera. The result is a ridiculous Star Wars rip-off titled Star Crash, featuring a lightsaber battle featuring David Hasselhoff (seen below). The movie also features Christopher Plummer as The Emperor (I kid you not). Director Lewis Coates went on to direct the 1983 film Hercules starring Lou Ferrigno.

There has been a lot of schedule shuffling going on at the studios this week.

Death Race

Universal has moved Paul W.S. Anderson’s Death Race remake up from September 26th to August 22nd 2008. The film was originally set to go head to head with DJ Caruso’s Eagle Eye and Disney’s Beverly Hills Chihuahua, but will now go up against Bangkok Dangerous starring Nicolas Cage, The House Bunny starring Anna Faris, Crossing Over starring Harrison Ford, and the Uma Thurman/Colin Firth romantic comedy The Accidental Husband.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li

Hancock Reshoots

/Film reader rbrill45 sent in a photo from the set of Will Smith from the set of Hancock. You might be asking yourself, why would /Film be interested in a photo from a production that wrapped in November of last year. That’s because the photo was taken on Saturday night… [cue inquisitive music] That’s right folks, the film did reshoots on Saturday night in Times Square.

Smith was seen wearing his black and green body suit. Time Square was packed with lots of extras wearing 1980’s-style bright color clothes. Hancock also looks very clean shaven, so maybe this is from a flashback or a sequence early on in the film. Apparently they shot for 12 hours and got some last minute footage they needed for the movie which hits theaters in seven weeks.

Meanwhile Flashing-Lights shot this photo of a Hancock standee that he found at the movie theater this weekend.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

A new photo from Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno has been released. Click on the image above to enlarge. I’m glad to see Smith returning to his Hockey roots, a running theme in his past films. I also very much digg the name of the hockey team: the Monroeville Zombies. I’m sure this jersey will eventually end up for sale on Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, which means I’ll have to slap some cash down. Yes, we’re fanboys… Smith also reveals some new details in his latest blog entry:

  • The first official test screening for the film will happen on Tuesday night somewhere in the midwest.
  • The current runtime of the film is 1:45
  • The first Internet-only teaser trailer will go live sometime early next week on QuickStopEntertainment. We can’t wait!

Josh Brolin as George W. Bush in Oliver Stone’s W.

The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly has the first photos of Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Banks as George and Laura Bush from Oliver Stone’s upcoming film W. Problem is, when we posted the photos last week no one had a high resolution scan of the two photos. Click on the photo above and below for higher resolution versions.

Josh Brolin as George W. Bush

Co-starring James Cromwell as George H. W. Bush, Ellen Burstyn as Barbara Bush, and Rob Corddry as Ari Fleischer. Based on the life and presidency of George W. Bush, Stone has compared W. to The Queen and Nixon. The screenplay was written pre-strike by Stanley Weiser, who had co-wrote Wall Street with Stone. Weiser and Stone read 17 books as part of their research for the script. W. began filming late last month in Shreveport, Louisiana. Friday it was announced that Lionsgate will release the film nationwide on October 17th 2008, just in time for the presidential election in November 2008.

Indiana Jones Desktop Icons

The official Indiana Jones website has launched a series of computer desktop icons representing the films from the Indiana Jones series. Right now only the Raiders of the Lost Ark set is the only one available. They will release the Temple of Doom set on May 13th, the Last Crusade set on May 20th, and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull set is listed as “coming soon” (I’m guessing sometime in June). Each of the sets were created by the Icon Factory and are being made available for free to fans.

Captain America’s Shield Spotted in Iron Man

Middle-lower left corner

images.jpg

Our friends at First Showing having confirmed that Captain America’s red, white and blue shield appears near the 1 hr 30 min mark in Iron Man. I looked for a better screen grab, but haven’t found one clearer than that above. The scene is the one where Pepper Potts/Gwyneth Paltrow walks in on Tony Stark/Robert Downey Jr. as he attempts to remove his suit after returning from his showdown with the fighter jets. You may recall the scene more clearly knowing that this is right around when Stark says to Potts,”Let’s face it, this is not the worst thing you’ve caught me doing.”

Apparently, the shield is as “clear as day” in the film complete with red coloring, but my friends and I didn’t notice it during my viewing. Did you? And if you’re wondering, the shield cannot be seen in the trailer when parts of the scene are shown.

As expected, fans are already working the shield’s cameo into the logic of Marvel’s new and ever expanding movie-verse, but I’m going with the “just for fun” theory right now. Without spoiling anything, the scene obviously occurs before Stark encounters Nick Fury/Samuel L. Jackson after the credits, and S.H.I.E.L.D. is not a prominent factor when the shield pops up. However, it still appears that Stark is at work on a prototype of Captain America’s signature weapon, so one can at least imagine a similar, stunning and advanced technology utilized by the character when he appears on screen in 2011’s The First Avenger: Captain America. Where World War II, cryogenics and Matthew McConaughey (ugh) come into play, who knows.

Discuss: Sight gag or is this all part of Marvel’s new franchise design? How do you feel about Stark possibly being the inventor of Captain America’s shield?

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Paramount has released yet another new movie trailer for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Before you get too excited, I must warn you that this trailer is pretty similar to the last one. It actually took my friend Neil from FSR to point out that it was in fact new. And it even took a few plays to spot the differences. One of the shots that is worth noting involves a plane flying over the Nazca Lines in Peru (seen above).
