Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Clip

It’s that time of the press tour — we’re getting an influx of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 material, and it won’t stop until we’re foaming at the mouth screaming “I am Groot” and/or we finally see the movie when it drops in theaters in two weeks.

But until that happens, here’s a brief new clip from the much-anticipated sequel to James Gunn‘s 2014 superhero hit.

Ignore the late-night show title of the video — the 55-second clip from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 runs for the first half of that embed before it’s superseded by the cast of the film happily chatting with Jimmy Kimmel about their kids. If you’re into that, then by all means, continue watching. But as for the clip, let’s recap…

Drax and Gamora are attacking a giant, tentacled monster to no avail, when Drax comes to a realization.

“The beast’s hide is too thick to pierced from the outside. I must cut through it from the inside,” Drax declares, prompting a baffled “Huh?” from Gamora.

Laughing maniacally and not heeding Gamora’s protests, Drax runs toward the monster brandishing his knives, and leaps into its mouth.

Stunned, Star-Lord yells at Gamora, who bickers back as we cut to Drax going bonkers against the inside of the monster’s neck. Outside, the Guardians rally, Star-Lord ordering Rocket to distract the monster so he can get to the cut at its neck. The clip cuts just as it gets to the climax of the scene.

The scene is a good reveal of what the team’s battle antics are like, which seem to not be much changed from the first movie — equal parts bickering, outrageous firepower, and over-the-top stunts. And it brings back the first film’s vibrant color schemes, which seem to be missing from the standard Avengers and Captain America flicks.

It’s in line with the early critical buzz for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which praise the movie as gorgeous, emotional and insane, or “like a water-color acid trip full of awesome,” as Fandango’s Erik Davis called it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. hits theaters May 5, 2017.
