Guardians of the Galaxy Audition

Marvel’s adaptation of Guardians of the Galaxy was a surprise hit, mostly because most mainstream audiences had no idea who this cosmic ragtag team of space criminals was. But it paid off in a big way, and it has become one of the favorites in Marvel Studios’ arsenal of comic book movies. And now you can see how two of its stars came to land their parts.

A new video showing off Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista auditioning for Star-Lord and Drax the Destroyer has surfaced, and it’s really cool to see an early version of a scene that ended up in the movie, albeit with some key changes. Watch the Guardians of the Galaxy audition video below!

Here’s the audition clip from Yahoo Movies:

As you can see, Chris Pratt is wearing some kind of makeshift Star-Lord wardrobe, almost like a kid who rifled through their parents’ closet for the closest thing he could find to the right outfit. Meanwhile, Bautista is covered with some kind of gray make-up, though not full Drax prosthetics, mostly just to get a decent idea of how he would look on camera. Drax ended up being just a touch greener in the movie, but you still get a good vibe from him in this audition.

What’s interesting is that in this scene, from when Star-Lord convinces Drax not to kill Gamora (Zoe Saldana), they’re actually trying to speak quietly, as if the scene was originally written for the characters to try and keep a low profile so as not to catch the attention of the prison guards. But as we see in the final scene, the guards really don’t care at all what the prisoners do to each other.

That change in the scene really helps with the tone and execution in the final cut, because the weight of certain lines can be better felt when using a normal tone of voice, or even yelling in that particular scene, instead of being forced to whisper. Plus, the dialogue was tightened up quite a bit, though it might just seem that way because this is an audition and the actors are still memorizing lines at this point. This is just one of the new goodies that will be available in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase Two Collection that arrives on December 8th next week, and you can still order it right here.
