If you ask me, Volkswagen’s “The Force” was hands-down the best commercial of Super Bowl 2011. And seeing as the ad topped YouTube’s list of the most-watched ads of 2011 as well as AdWeek’s list of the best commercials of the year, I suspect I’m not the only one who thought so. It’s no wonder, then, that Volkswagen is looking to return to familiar territory in this year’s Super Bowl slot — or that they’re going out of their way to make sure you know it.
The car company has just posted a teaser for its upcoming ad, which combines two of the Internet’s favorite things: Star Wars and adorable animals. If this isn’t tailor-made for going viral, I don’t know what is. We don’t normally post commercials for commercials on /Film (well, okay, sometimes we do), but I’m going to make an exception for this one just because it put a big smile on my face. Watch it after the jump.

Once the Super Bowl commercial dust finally settled, it seemed like Transformers: Dark of the Moon got lost in shuffle. Everyone was talking about their love for Super 8 and excitement at finally seeing Captain America: The First Avenger but what about good old Sam Witwicky and Bumblebee? The fact of the matter is we’ve already seen two Transformers movies and we fully expect director Michael Bay to amp up the action to an even higher degree the third time around. That’s what the 30-second spot delivered. We got some enticing little glimpses of new robots and stars and then some final shots of Optimus Prime flying down onto the street, releasing something off his back and then going on an ass-kicking rampage of epic proportions. Expectations met.
But the commercial begged the question, what is going on with Optimus Prime? Does he have wings of something? io9 might have the answer as they’ve uncovered the official Optimus Prime toy from the film, plus we grabbed a few screen shots like the one above to illustrate. Read More »
Would a trailer for a JJ Abrams film be complete without a cryptic easter egg or two? Let’s hope we never have to find out.
In an effort to possibly one-up the viral campaign that launched through the film’s teaser trailer, the recent 30-second Super Bowl commercial for the Spielberg-produced, Abrams-directed Super 8 may have managed to sneak in a split-second shot of the alien creature that acts as a catalyst for the film. Find a screengrab of that, along with a couple of other easter eggs from the TV spot, after the break. Read More »

Earlier tonight I tweeted “Holy fuck” on Twitter, and almost everyone following me on Twitter knew exactly what I was talking about. Yes, a new television commercial for Michael Bay‘s Transformers 3 aired during the Super Bowl tonight.
I know I shouldn’t get my hopes up, but Transformers: Dark of the Moon looks like it will be action packed. I especially like the shot near the end which follows Optimus Prime through the city. It is so unlike Bay, and gives me hope for the film’s action. I feel the second movie especially had way too many cuts, and the orientation to the action was at times confusing. This movie was shot in 3D, so I’m assuming Bay had to adjust his ADD editing style for that to work. And even though the sequence I’m referencing contains one cut, it is very unnoticeable.
