Michael Chabon has now officially been tasked with bringing Disneyland to life in the upcoming Jon Favreau-directed film Magic Kingdom. A few months ago, it was rumored that Chabon, the author of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay and screenwriter of Spider-Man 2 and the upcoming John Carter, would be writing the film, described as Night at the Museum set at Disneyland. Now those rumors have proven to be true. Chabon will write, Favreau will direct and work is already well underway. It’s always nice to spend a weekend with old friends. It’s even better when those friends are Dick Tracy, Captain Kirk, Clark Kent, Mr. Incredible and Tony Stark. The Los Angeles Times hosted their second annual Hero Complex Film Festival in Hollywood this weekend, screening classic superhero and genre films with their filmmakers in attendance. Beginning on Thursday with Dick Tracy and Warren Beatty and ending Sunday with Iron Man and Iron Man 2 with Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr., it was a whirlwind four days of great movies, interviews and surprises. As part of the promotions for the recently revamped Star Tours, Disney has unveiled an amusing new spot featuring the great and fearsome Darth Vader and a couple of his Stormtroopers taking a tour of Disneyland. In it, the Dark Lord arrives at the park with the intention of checking out the new Star Tours. When he sees that it’s not open yet, he takes his Stormtroopers around the rest of the park. It’s kind of an obvious joke — scary Darth Vader acting goofy is a concept that’s been done in countless parody videos — but it’s still pretty charming. Watch the commercial after the jump.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Middle Earth, everywhere you go. Off in New Zealand, Peter Jackson and crew are back at it filming two films based on The Hobbit. On June 28, the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions are finally coming to Blu-ray and, in anticipation of that, each of those films are coming back to a theater near you for one night only. But that’s not all. Beginning this Fall, each one of the films – in celebration of their ten year anniversary – will be touring with a full, live orchestral accompaniment of Howard Shore‘s award-winning scores.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Live In Concert premiered in New York in 2009 and, this October, will come to the West Coast for several stops. The event is a feature length, digital presentation of the film on a 60 foot screen while the Munich Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Chorale and the Phoenix Boys Choir perform the score live. In October 2008, Universal Studios announced that they would be launching a theme park attraction based on Michael Bay‘s Transformers at the Hollywood and Singapore theme parks. The ride will use High Definition 3D footage, along with practical special effects and “stunning” robotics (ie expect giant animatronic robots) to “place humans in the middle of a war between the Autobots and Decepticons”. It is expected to use the same ride system of The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man ride from Universal’s Islands of Adventure. The new ride lasts five minutes, a quarter of a mile, with the ride vehicles rising to 60 feet in the air.
Last month Universal announced that 20-30 minutes of storytelling will be built into the queue, similar to the experience done at Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey in Orlando. Pandora and Seattle have a lot in common. Both have a strong pro-environmental stance, lush, beautiful green foliage and a valuable natural resource. And though Pandora is fake and Seattle is real, the two become one this weekend as the Experience Music Project Museum will host the inaugural opening of Avatar: The Exhibition. The exhibit will be open from June 4-September 3 and include “authentic props and costumes, interactive displays, concept models, and sketches” from the highest grossing film of all-time. Texas is known for being flat, minimalistic but still incredibly beautiful and that’s certainly the theme of the posters for the 2011 Rolling Roadshow. This year, instead of going all across the country, the Alamo Drafthouse is keeping things close to home as they’ll travel across the Lone Star State and show Texas films set in Texas. Films such as Blood Simple, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Searchers, Red River and more. Last month, a battle between Quentin Tarantino and The Coen Brothers began on art gallery walls in New York City. Later this week, that battle continues in San Francisco as Spoke Art presents Quentin vs. Coen Round Two, a follow-up exhibit to their wildly successful New York show. Tons of recognizable artists have contributed new art based on the films of Tarantino and the Coens, and fans can see, and purchase it, for themselves, beginning June 2 through June 30 at the Spoke Art Gallery, 816 Sutter St., San Francisco.
