Mr Robot Legacy Review

(We’re going to kickstart our weekly discussion of USA’s Mr. Robot season 3 by answering one simple question: who had the biggest mental breakdown in this week’s episode?)

What happened to Tyrell? It was a question that we were clamoring for the answer to throughout the last season…but then kind of shrugged off come season 3. With Mr. Robot‘s recent episodes determined to follow through on a soft “reset,” “Legacy” seems like an appropriate detour, but ends up feeling like filler.

mr robot undo review
(We’re going to kickstart our weekly discussion of USA’s Mr. Robot season 3 by answering one simple question: who had the biggest mental breakdown in this week’s episode?)

I feel like Mr. Robot has become somewhat cheekier since the last season, eschewing some of its self-serious cinematic techniques for cute gimmicks — like the mute button from the last episode and the omnipresent emoji faces from today’s episode. Of course, I know that Mr. Robot did that for a full episode in season 2 with the sitcom subplot, but that felt more audacious than whimsical.

That’s not to say Mr. Robot has suddenly become a comedy. Things are still dire and darker than ever — the looming emotionless emoji staring Elliot down on the subway is a perfect indication of that — but it doesn’t always have to be a soul-crushing experience. Bobby Cannavale’s gleefully malicious character added to that tone in the season premiere and his absence is felt in the second episode, which once again delves into the nature of Elliot’s depression. To that end, “Undo” is both stagnant and busy story-wise, with the show and Elliot trying to rebuild what he broke. But the episode is thrown for a loop after a major character death that sent shock waves…absolutely nowhere. But it’s too early to tell how this shocking death, and this soft “reboot” episode that calls back to so many elements of season 1, will affect the rest of the story.

mr robot power saver mode review
(We’re going to kickstart our weekly discussion of USA’s Mr. Robot season 3 by answering one simple question: who had the biggest mental breakdown in this week’s episode?)

The first season of Mr. Robot was one of the most compelling, labyrinthine pieces of storytelling to come out of cable television, but its momentum was nearly derailed by the equally ambitious but discordant second season. Happily, it seems like the third season is a return to form for the hacker thriller series.

The season 3 premiere of Mr. Robot brings the USA series back to its noir-inspired roots, but doesn’t let the mystery envelop the show like it had previously. The narrative momentum is back on hyper-speed, with Elliot quickly regaining his footing while supporting characters soon become more transparent. The stark visual identity that showrunner and writer Sam Esmail brought to the series still threatens to disquiet the viewer, but star Rami Malek brings renewed energy to his role, grounding the series with his wide-eyed vulnerability.

Mr Robot Season 3 trailer

I’ve frequently wondered what Mr. Robot would look like in a post-Trump world. The nihilistic, anarchist viewpoint of the series seemed overly cynical when it first hit USA Network’s airwaves in the summer of 2015, giving a fantastical update to the grim, solipsistic anger of ’90s male fantasies like Fight Club.

But what once seemed out of place now seems both prophetic and misguided, especially in the Season 3 trailer of Mr. Robot that emphasizes the economic and technological warfare that Elliot and Mr. Robot are engaging in. But the trailer is riveting and intense, bringing back some of the ambitious momentum that first launched Mr. Robot into the pop culture zeitgeist in its first season.

mr. robot season three

Last year season two of Mr. Robot appeared more divisive than season one. After the popularity of its first season, though, it’s natural Sam Esmail‘s USA drama wouldn’t match everyone’s expectations. Plus, the twist midway through season two was destined to polarize. Whether the reveal ended up working or not can be debated, but it was still one of the many bold choices made with season two.

USA Network has announced a Mr. Robot season 3 premiere date: the series returns for its third season this October. Below, learn more about Mr. Robot season 3 and who just got promoted to a series regular.
