What To Expect When The Avengers Meet The Guardians Of The Galaxy In 'Infinity War'

We still have four more movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that will hit theaters before The Avengers: Infinity War. But with the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 making the publicity rounds and production on Infinity War happening right now, there have been a slew of new details about the Avengers sequel that have come to light.

Below, we dive into what we can expect when the Avengers meet the Guardians of the Galaxy, what some of the cast members are hoping to see for their characters, and a certain revelation from some set photos giving fans something they've been hoping to see for a little while now. However, beware of potential spoilers from here on out.

There are quite a few little Avengers Infinity War details that have emerged, so we'll address them individually.

The Avengers Meet the Guardians of the Galaxy

We know that Avengers: Infinity War will bring together Earth's mightiest heroes with the Guardians of the Galaxy for the first time on the big screen. The two teams will have to join forces to take on the threat that is Thanos, but it sounds like they might not get along so easily when they first meet.

In an interview with Fandango, Zoe Saldana talked about the scene where the two superhero teams come together, and it sounds like it's already been shot. Saldana said:

"We were so cocky. Deep down we were like, 'We're the Guardians of the Galaxy!' But it was super exciting – the fact that they're bringing every character in the Marvel universe together and that this super villain is such a prominent figure amongst the Guardians of the Galaxy gives our level of importance quite a boost."

Dave Bautista, who plays Drax the Destroyer, echoed the sentiments of the Guardians being a little cocky, mostly because they're a cohesive unit, making them a little more intimidating. Bautista explains:

"When we come onto set as the Guardians, we are the Guardians. Anybody stepping onto set with us has to deal with all of us. There are usually one or two Avengers. We are the Guardians, we come as that and carry a scene like that and we do business as usual, which is a lot of chemistry, a lot of interaction amongst ourselves. And the Russos were very encouraging of that. I think we've established ourselves and we deserve to be right up there with the Avengers. I think we're just as strong, if not stronger, as a unit 'cause we're a family."

I'm interpreting that as so far there hasn't been a scene shot that has all of the Avengers on set with all of the Guardians of the Galaxy, but that doesn't mean there aren't scenes where they'll all be together in the movie. It's likely rather difficult to round up so many cast members at the same time due to scheduling conflicts, so presumably scenes featuring all of them together are being shot in smaller chunks, which is why only a couple Avengers have been around at any given time.

Then again, there's something interesting to be noted by something Zoe Saldana said. The actress noted:

"We're also in space, so we're not being held by gravity. And you know we're stronger."

They're in space? Does that mean the first time that the Avengers meet the Guardians of the Galaxy it's not on Earth? I've wondered if it would be the Guardians of the Galaxy who have to come to Earth, but Zoe Saldana specifically mentioning them meeting in space is an interesting detail. Maybe their meeting in space is the reason that only a couple Avengers have encountered the Guardians of the Galaxy on set so far. Perhaps they won't all meet until Thanos makes his way towards Earth.

On the next page, find out some details about Drax the Destroyer, Nebula and a certain Avengers romance.

Will Drax the Destroyer Get a Chance to Fight Thanos?

In the first Guardians of the Galaxy, we learn that Drax the Destroyer has a grudge against Ronan the Accuser for killing his family. But even after the villain is destroyed, Drax still has an axe to grind because he learns that Ronan was merely a puppet for Thanos. Since the Mad Titan is the villain of Avengers: Infinity War, will Drax get a chance to place his finger across his throat? That's what the actor is hoping for (via ScreenRant):

"I'd love to see him go head-to-head with Thanos. I'd love to see that. I've always been a proponent for that. You now, they're just really brilliant about their writing. James Gunn has so much, well, he'll have complete creative control over Guardians 3 and he has tons of input as far as Guardians go on in Infinity War, so I just trust in him, man. I do completely."

It seems Bautista has learned not to give anything away from the rest of the Marvel cast, and it's good to know that James Gunn is still very much involved with how the Guardians are handled in Avengers: Infinity War so they don't lose that flair he's given them in the two previous movies.

Beyond taking on Thanos head-to-head, is there anyone else Bautista is hoping to share some screen time with? The actor told ScreenRant:

"Oh, I've said for years, and years, and years. It's Robert Downey Jr./Tony Stark, man. I think there's so much humor to be had there with Drax and Tony Stark. With him being such a sarcastic bastard and Drax taking everything so literally. I think there's tons of humor to be had there. I'm also a huge fan of Robert's."

I'm pretty sure most of what Tony Stark says would go right over Drax's head, no matter how fast his reflexes are.

Will Nebula's Comic Book Storyline Be Used?

Nebula, played by Karen Gillan, has been a problem for the Guardians of the Galaxy in the past. But in the sequel, she ends up joining the team, though we don't entirely know why yet. However, if it has something to do with Thanos, then it might be so we can see some of her comic book story from the Infinity Gauntlet story arc come to the big screen. Karen Gillan was asked if she's hoping to see some of Nebula's storyline in the Infinity War movie, and here's what she had to say to ScreenRant:

"I hope so. Of course, that would be amazing! When I was preparing to play Nebula the first time, I read the Infinity Gauntlet. I loved it because it was like the most Nebula heavy comic and yeah, I mean that would be amazing if it does for that storyline. I'm hoping. I don't know yet – very big secret, but I'm hoping."

In Infinity Gauntlet, Nebula is given one hell of a beating by her father Thanos, who transforms her into a maimed and seemingly mindless zombie, burned and disfigured by his energy beams. Despite her state, she ends up able to get the Infinity Gauntlet from him and ends up wreaking her own havoc on the galaxy. Of course, this storyline also includes a bunch of characters who haven't been introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet, and some who never will be due to character rights.

There's a chance Nebula could still play a key part in Avengers: Infinity War, but I wouldn't expect to see much of her storyline from the comics end up on the big screen.

Captain America Civil War - Vision and Scarlet Witch

Vision and Scarlet Witch Spark a Romance

In the comics, Vision and Scarlet Witch have an on-again, off-again romance, and that's something fans have been hoping to see on the big screen. Though their relationship has grown since they were both introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron, there's been no clear indication that there is a romantic spark between the two. But it sounds like love between the two characters will finally blossom in Avengers: Infinity War.

E! Online UK has some spy photos from the set of Infinity War, which is currently shooting over in Edinburgh, Scotland. We can't post them here because we don't like being sued, but they show Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen sharing a kiss by a window. In the scene, Vision opens the curtains with his powers and then Scarlet Witch appears at his side, they get closer, and then they kiss.

Even more interesting than the romance between these two characters is the fact that Paul Bettany appears more human than usual. Gone are his typical green and pink enhancements, and he instead appears as a normal person in civilian clothes, something we haven't seen yet. His Infinity Stone appears to be gone from his head too. Could this be a manipulation of how Vision looks thanks to his powers? Or is this maybe some kind of dream sequence or vision (no pun intended) showing something that isn't happening in reality?

Since we're still a year out from Avengers: Infinity War hitting theaters, there is still plenty of time to learn more about the Marvel Studios sequel, especially as more Marvel movies start hitting the big screen this year. Stay tuned for more soon.
