On August 27th, Fox will re-release Avatar to theaters with more than eight minutes of “Never Before Seen Footage” exclusively in Digital 3D and IMAX 3D. (That is: no 2D re-release.) Now there’s a TV spot for the special edition, and while it is only 30 seconds long, hardcore fans of the film will notice there are a couple new shots to be seen in the clip.
Director James Cameron previously said of the special edition re-release,
The question is the appetite still going to be there after the summer glut of movies. We’re going to assess that. We’re talking about maybe adding in additional footage and doing something creative.
Cameron later said, “We’re working on finishing an additional six minutes of the film — which includes a lot of Weta work — for a theatrical re-release in August.”
