Author Archive: Peter Sciretta

Peter Sciretta wrote and directed a feature film you will never see, and now he bitterly bashes movies on the internet. A film geek and popcultured fanboy, Peter lives in San Francisco, where he sees 7 new movies a week on average. His favorite films include Back to the Future, Magnolia, Go, Almost Famous, Spider-Man 2, Clerks, and Fight Club. He loves well made popcorn movies and smart indie flicks but hates pretentious oscar bait period films based on best selling novels, no matter how well acted and crafted they may be. As December nears, some of the potential line-up for the 2008 Sundance Film Festival is beginning to become clear.
Paper Hearts - First up is a film that almost no one has heard about until now. The feature filmmaking debut of Nicholas Jasenovec, the film is an unconventional comedy which is being described as “part-documentary, part-scripted comedy” about Michael Cera’s real-life relationship with Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up). Not much else is known about the film, but indie insiders are already predicting that it will be this year’s Sundance break out hit ala Napoleon Dynamite. [THR]

We just got sent another batch of photos from Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler. I’m guessing this is probably the last of them considering the film hits theaters within a matter of weeks. The Wrestler is being released in limited theaters on December 17th 2008.

More after the jump.

New Line has released a new movie trailer, poster, and a bunch of new production photos for Ken Kwapis’ big screen adaptation of He’s Just Not That Into You.

The film has a wonderful cast: Jennifer Connelly, Drew Barrymore, Scarlett Johansson, Justin Long, Ben Affleck, Kevin Connolly (Entourage) (notice how I excluded Jennifer Aniston even though she’s clearly one of the leads? That was on purpose. I don’t like her very much. She is the opposite of wonderful). The film is about modern day relationships and how men and women often misconstrue the intentions of the opposite sex. The authors of the book that the film is based on were consultant [...]

I was passing through Best Buy over the weekend when I came across the huge new box set — The Sopranos - The Complete Series. I somehow missed the press release for this so I thought I’d cover it in Cool Stuff.

Weighing in at 10 pounds, The Sopranos: The Complete Series includes a 56-page hand-assembled album enclosed in a sleek black linen box featuring all 86 episodes re-mastered on 28 discs as well as two bonus discs and two CD soundtracks, spread over three discs. The album also includes 16-pages of editorial detailing the entire award-winning series. The set is loaded with over 3½ hours of never-before-seen bonus [...]

Amazon is selling The Shield: The Complete Sixth Season for $15.99, 73% off the $59.95 MSRP.
“Continuing directly after season 5, Vic and the Strike Team are distraught over Lem’s death. Shane has been overcome by guilt and becomes reckless and suicidal. Kavanaugh refuses to let the case die and resorts to planting evidence and coercing witnesses to lie about the Strike Team. Dutch and Claudette begin to suspect his integrity. Vic learns from Claudette that the Chief plans to force him into early retirement — and vows to wreak bloody vengeance on Lem’s killer before losing his badge. Claudette learns that the Barn could be shut down if no improvements [...]

ComingSoon has confirmed that the first (non Comic Con exclusive) movie trailer for Wolverine will be attached to The Day The Earth Stood Still on December 12th. And apparently Fox isn’t going to put the trailer online until some later point, forcing comic book geeks to see their potentially bad sci-fi remake (I say potentially, because I have yet to be impressed with the footage released thus far, and the move of announcing the attachment of a Wolverine trailer smells of desperation).
And we all know that the trailer will be bootlegged and leaked onto YouTube. It always happens. And its a shame because hundreds of thousands, if not millions are [...]

You might remember Blackwolf - The Dragonmaster from the classic bit where Triumph The insult Comic Dog visited the Star Wars line. Well Triumph reunited with Blackwolf to meet the costumed band LORDI.

Remember earlier in the year when rumor spread across the interwebs that Josh Brolin would be playing a Terminator in McG’s Terminator Salvation? Well it turns out there was something to the rumor after all. Brolin admitted to MTV that he was in talks to join the production.
“Yeah. I talked to Christian [Bale] for a couple hours,” Brolin told MTV. “I really liked the script though I hear that’s not what they filmed. The one I read was very interesting and dark. Ultimately though I didn’t think it felt right.”
Brolin would probably have played the character of Marcus, which is played by Avatar star Sam Worthington in the completed film. [...]

Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr addresses his concerns about the announced superhero team-up movie The Avengers in a new interview with MTV:
“If we don’t get it right, it’s really going to suck. It has to be the crowning blow of Marvel’s best and brightest, because it’s the hardest thing to get right. It’s tough to spin all the plates for one of these characters,” Downey tells MTV, later adding: “The danger you run with colliding all these worlds is that Jon was very certain that “Iron Man” should be set in a very realistic way. Nothing that happened in Iron Man is really outside the realm of possibility. Once [...]

Making a Twilight sequel isn’t going to be cheap. Stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, who were each paid $2 million for the first film, will be getting enormous pay raises. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Pattinson and Stewart will be paid $12 million each for the sequel, New Moon. It’s worth noting that the first film was made for only $37 million. Sounds like the budget will be upped considerably for the sequel. I think I’m going to be sick.

The Criterion Collection is making a big push into digital distribution. Their new website — The Criterion Online Cinematheque, which launched this week, introduces $5 one-week movie rentals. If you decide to buy the movie on DVD or Blu-ray, Criterion.com will discount the rental price from your purchase.
The site also has a ton of new content, including some of the essays included with some of their DVD releases. For example, you can read Martin Scorsese’s thoughts on Wes Anderson’s Bottle Rocket or learn what Rian Johnson’s top 10 Criterion films are. Also, Each month they will be programing online film festivals, which will be advertising supported. Check out the video [...]

You may have heard about Evil Dead: The Musical, but what about Waterworld: The Musical? /Film reader Mack J sent over this teaser trailer for the musical stage adaptation which stars Patrick Warburton (aka The Tick). But don’t get too excited, apparently it is only a viral video to draw attention to Made for Each Other, a movie starring Warburton, Danny and Christopher Masterson, Samm Levine, and Bijou Phillips.

Many people were surprised when King of Kong director Seth Gordon signed on to direct Four Christmases, the Vince Vaughn/Reese Witherspoon romantic comedy which comes out this Wednesday. I think everyone expected Gordon would either work within the world of documentaries or work in the realm of geek-focused films. Gordon revealed on last night’s The /Filmcast After Dark that he was gunning for the new He-Man live-action movie.
“I read a He-Man script that was really good,” Gordon said of Justin Marks’ screenplay Grayskull:  The Masters of the Universe. “It’s great. It’s pretty awesome. It’s already been snatched up… I was too slow to get to it, but its gonna be [...]

VOIR has the first production photos from Woody Allen’s new film Whatever Works. The movie stars Larry David as a highly eccentric character who runs into a girl from the South named Melodie, played by Evan Rachel Wood. The two of them, joined by Melodie’s Mother and Father, “get into a series of highly improbable, far out, romantic entanglements.”
