'Assassin's Creed' Clip: Michael Fassbender Goes On The Run

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story may be sucking up all the attention right now, but it's not the only game in town this month. A few days later, Michael Fassbender will be launching himself off of a roof in 15th century Spain to land in a theater near you, with his video game adaptation Assassin's Creed. 20th Century Fox has just shared a new clip from the film, and you can check it out below.

Assassin's Creed Clip

Assassin's Creed looks pretty enough, which shouldn't be a big surprise seeing as it comes from Fassbender's Macbeth director Justin Kurzel. The scenery in wide shots is stunning, and the action looks well choreographed. The cuts to the Animus serve as a reminder that this isn't just some medieval action epic — it's a medieval action epic buried inside a modern sci-fi thriller. And while I've never played the game myself, I've heard from people who have that it does a good job of approximating the look and feel of the source material.

But I still don't feel like Assassin's Creed has really given me a reason to care about anything I'm seeing here. Again, I'm not much of a gamer so if you are, your mileage may vary. From here, though, it kind of just feels like watching someone else play a video game. Hopefully I'm wrong. It's time for someone to break the so-called video game curse and deliver a film that lives up to actual video games. Maybe Assassin's Creed will be it.

Assassin's Creed is in theaters December 21.

Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.
