Well, I was right with my top two picks from last week as Night at the Museum and The Pursuit of Happyness continued to dominate the box office. I underestimated the success of two new releases and overestimated a third. This week there are actually five new movies opening so there is a lot of competition for the #1 spot. Will any of the five be able to top Ben Stiller’s very successful comedy? Read on to find out:

1. Arthur and the Invisibles. The answer this week is “yes” as Luc Besson’s fantasy finally gets a wide release after several weeks in a limited run. The family audience hasn’t had much to go to see lately, and this looks like something perfect for kids which adults may or may not enjoy. It does have the fantasy elements that are popular right now. I don’t foresee it being a huge hit, but it will do pretty well and make enough to dethrone Night at the Museum with $22 million.

2. Night at the Museum. I was amazed looking up the stats on this movie that it has only been opened for three weeks. With a total Box office of $164 million, I would have thought it had been out longer. It has shown good staying power in those three weeks, and will continue to do so. It dropped about 35% of its audience between weeks 2 and 3. If it does that again, it will make $15 million. I think it will do better than that, bringing in $18 million.

3. Primeval. Here we have an adventure / horror film that offers a bit of counter programming from what else is out there at the theaters right now. If you don’t have kids, and don’t want to see a comedy or a drama like The Pursuit of Happyness, then Primeval might be the movie for you. It was a good opening with $12 million.

4. Stomp the Yard. There have been several of these types of high school dance movies the last few years. It has had a good amount of advertisements, and should do well with teenagers. It makes $10 million.

5. The Pursuit of Happyness. This has done very well so far, bringing in $124 million. Will Smith is one of the biggest box office draws out there in Hollywood right now. It will suffer from the competition this week, its last week in the top 5. It will make $7 million.

The other new movies opening this week are Alpha Dog and Miss Potter. The first is about a serial killer, but I just haven’t seen enough of it to feel like it has a chance to do very well at the box office. Miss Potter has gotten good reviews and has a chance to do well in its first week of wide release. It has averaged about $4,500 per screen in two weeks of limited release. If it does that well in wide release it could crack the top 5 depending on how many screens it actually plays on. I feel it will do well, but fall just short of the top 5.
