When it was first announced that LOST creator JJ Abrams would be writing and producing a new Star Trek movie, there was no director mentioned. It was reported that Abrams had the option to direct but the director expressed other intentions in early interviews. Well the director has been officially announced...
Viacom CEO Philippe Dauman has confirmed that Abrams will direct the Star Trek reboot/prequel. Abrams created Alias and Felicity, and directed Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible III.
"We're revitalizing it in a new and interesting way," Dauman said.
In an interview with TV Guide, Abrams revealed that he didn't immediately accept the project: "There have been 10 films and all these different series, so it was a question of finding out what they were anticipating. But it became clear pretty quickly that they were in a really open frame of mind. Then it became, 'Hell, yeah!'"
Abrams is writing the screenplay with his Lost friends Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk. They hope to have a completed draft by Christmas.
Abrams has said in interviews that shooting next spring is, "realistic," and that "otherwise... not going to make the date that we have." Paramount is targeting a 2008 or 2009 release date for the film.
