A Scanner Darkly director Richard Linklater is developing a sequel to the classic 1973 Jack Nicholson film The Last Detail.

"I haven't even talked to Nicholson about it yet; I don't even know if he's read it. ... It hasn't gotten that far down the line. They haven't made an offer to him yet or anything like that”, Linklater told MTV. “[But] you can't do it without the Bad Ass," he laughed.

In the film, Nicholson played Billy "Bad Ass" Buddusky, one of two US Navy lifers who are assigned shore patrol duty to transport a young sailot to Portsmouth Naval Prison. On their journey to Portsmouth, the prisoner (played by Randy Quaid) begins to grow on the two sailors and they decide to show him a good time before serving his unjust sentence of eight years.

Linklater says that Quaid would also need to return: "I sent [Quaid] the script, and he'd be great. I hope he'll [do it]."

The sequel, currently titled Last Flag Flying, has "Buddusky running a bar and Quaid's Larry Meadows reuniting with him after the Iraq war takes his son's life."

Moviehole says that Morgan Freeman may be interested in taking over the role of Mule Mulhall from the deceased Otis Young.

The original film was nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Actor (Jack Nicholson), Best Supporting Actor (Randy Quaid), and Best Adapted Screenplay.
