Just Jared (via: BleedingCool) has the first set photo of James Franco, Freida Pinto, and Andy Serkis in The Escapist helmer Rupert Wyatt’s Planet of the Apes prequel Rise of the Apes. The photo is interesting because you can see Serkis in his performance capture suit, complete with head camera (which captures facial movements).

As you probably recall, the Apes in the movie are being created using CGI by the wonderful tram at WETA Digital, rather than the costumed actors we’ve seen in past installments of the franchise. WETA will employ “certain of the groundbreaking technologies developed for AVATAR” and “will render, for the first time ever in the film series, photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors.”

Previously:

James Franco (Spider-Man/Milk) who is set to play the lead, “a young, driven scientist who becomes a crucial figure in the war between humans and apes.” Other co-stars include John Lithgow, who plays Franco’s father, also a scientist, Don Cheadle (Iron Man 2), Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), who plays a primatologist who helps Franco, Brian Cox will play “the villainous owner of a primate sanctuary who runs the facility without compassion for the animals that live there,” and Andy Serkis, who will play Caesar, the chimp who leads the simian revolt. David Oyelowo (The Last King of Scotland, A Sound of Thunder, Derailed) has been offered the role of Steve Jacobs, the board of directors who announces phase 2, clinical trials. Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films) plays the son of Brian Cox’s character, who is “the villainous owner of a primate sanctuary who runs the facility without compassion for the animals that live there.”

Fox has released the official plot synopsis:

RISE OF THE APES (tentative title) is an origin story in the truest sense of the term. Set in present day San Francisco, the film is a reality-based cautionary tale, a science fiction/science fact blend, where man’s own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.

The screenplay is written by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa.

Fox’s Tom Rothman has said that it is “a kind of prequel story before the first story, with a return to the social thematics that mark the first one, but with an entirely contemporary setting - Earth 2009.” The film won’t have talking monkeys and will not end with chimps taking over Earth. Instead the film will be a hard science fiction film about humans that use science to create hyper-intelligent chimpanzees.

Rise of the Apes will hit theaters on June 24th 2011.

What was the big deal with using prosthetics and costumed actors? CGI will always be just that - CGI. I don't care how "photo-realistic" they swear it will be, it always ends up looking fake.

This topic was covered by the original "Ape" movies. Why pretend it's a new idea? It's a reboot of a prequel. That should be mentioned just for the sheer craziness. Also it sounds a bit like Chrightons last book "Next"
After reading this article I have to ask myself why do a Planet of the Apes movie with no ape uprising. That's like making a Terminator movie featuring remote control cars and NO TERMINATORS!
On the topic of the picture: I really want to see what the chimps look like.

"by the wonderful tram at WETA Digital" what are they giving backlot tours now?
  • Must be hard to keep a straight face with the mocap guy pretending to be a gorilla walking next to you.
  • "mocap guy" MOCAP GUY!!! Andy Serkis deserves your respect sir!

"photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors"

I thought the costumed actors were pretty photo-realistic myself. If anyone can pull it off, it's Andy S.
  • has andy ever really done a movie live action other then the cook in KK and that lil openin bit in Return of the King
  • Check his IMDb, he's been in quite a bit of stuff.
  • He was in The Prestige, as well as this really weird straight to DVD movie that was essentially a remake of Rosemary's Baby with Heather Graham. I'm sure he's done plenty of other stuff as well.

Freida looks like Mila Kunis in that pic above.
  • Me want Freida Pinto!

  • don't even bother with the CGI, the movie will be better like this.

Okay, I know it's an illusion because of the long lens compression, but DAMN, Serkis looks tiny in this photo...
  • I like the cast, but it sounds so stupid.
  • How long until Serkis is used to his full potential? I mean... yeah, the man is the absolute best in the business in the motion capture suit, but he's also a damn good actor that just seems to be underutilized. Still think he should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Two Towers
  • Chuckowsky
Actually, there was a small campaign for his Oscar nod, but it turned out that the Academy rules out the possibility of nominating an actor for a performance, if his body wasn't present on screen.

But I agree, his motion capture is much better than usual acting we see from most of struggling people in Hollywood.
  • TheGreenMalice
He may prefer mo-cap roles. Just a thought.
  • Perhaps he does. He does do quite a few non-mo-cap roles, though. Just nothing that really shows his acting talents.
  • BforBusiness
i think true fans of films and performances know how talented andy serkis from watching his performances. he's brilliant.
  • I agree, the guys is extremely talented. It's a shame he's so often 'hidden' behind a CGI character. He definitely should have been nominated for Two Towers.
  • Haha, Andy Serkis being the monkey once again...

I mean, I really don't know how Franco and Pinto do it, if I saw Serkis next to me faking an ape I'd be on the ground laughing. Now, after looking at this picture, whenever I see Franco around the ape, I'll envision Franco with Serkis in this suit... great!
  • i so like freida pinto.. she is looking nice <3
  • Barricade84
lol i think Andy Serkis was born with those mo-cap sensors....
  • Andy Serkis been getting typecast as an ape since 2001*

*yea i said 2001 cause what's his face from lord of the rings remind me of a ape so all lord of the ring fan shut up. Also most overrated trilogy of all time
  • Drytoad1
Hey, you made another pun.... " 2001 " had apes in that too! Very good! :D
  • Oh good, you explained yourself. Otherwise I was going to attack you for implying that Gollum, or Smeagol, was an ape. But in this case, I guess I'll shut up.

Furthermore, thanks for letting us know your thoughts on The Lord of the Rings, I couldn't have gotten through my day without knowing how Sean DeTolve felt about the trilogy.
  • haha, yes. First i think peter jackson isnt that good of a filmmaker, Yes lord of the rings are his best. second the way he moved in all three had ape like move. third i love pissing off Lord of the Rings fans.
  • TheGreenMalice
Sometimes it scares me that people like you will someday reproduce.

"The film won’t have talking monkeys and will not end with chimps taking over Earth"

Then why is it called Rise of the Apes again?
  • Nickula11
It's called RISE of the apes not "apes at their apex" - which has a beautiful pun in there.
  • Cool, I'm quickly coming around to this movie. The cast, and the inclusion of WETA have turned this from a silly idea into something with lots of potential.
  • i know he's playing an ape and he's in a mocap suit

but jesus that photo does not do serkis any favors
  • freemachine
It looks like something from TMZ:
