To the many, many people who bring up H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness (the book that combines exploratory adventure, science fiction and Lovecraft’s tales of great, horrible old gods) every time Guillermo del Toro has a window of availability: this one’s for you. The director has talked about wanting to adapt Lovecraft’s story for many years, but it always seemed like a really tough sell. After all, what studio wants to finance an expensive, dark, R-rated film like this?

As it turns out, that studio appears to be Universal. Can’t hurt that James Cameron has come aboard to produce. Has the time finally come for a big-budget Lovecraft film?

We’ve known that del Toro planned to announce his next film after Comic Con; we’ve known it would be horror, shot in 3D, and a film that he’s been wanting to make for a long time. Now Deadline says that del Toro and James Cameron have partnered to make At the Mountains of Madness for Universal, which after Hellboy II wanted to work with del Toro badly enough that it picked up the rights to the story from DreamWorks.

Deadline says the film will go into pre-production within weeks, and that it will shoot next year. (GdT said at Comic Con that he’d shoot his next film in May 2011.) The site also says the film “will be a big ticket item, shot in 3D, where Cameron’s expertise can really help. Cameron has said he won’t put his name on many future movies outside of the 3D reboot of Fantastic Voyage at Fox, but I’ve heard he’s making an exception for del Toro.”

Del Toro and Matthew Robbins wrote the original script draft of Mountains, many years ago and they’re reworking it now. I can only imagine what they’ll come up with if they’ve got the strong backing of Universal and James Cameron. I’m not wild about the 3D idea, but maybe this team can make the 3D sing. The rest of the equation is fantastic.

(And what an interesting place Universal is in right now. The studio has had a couple big financial losers recently, but is still making some of the more risky-looking studio movies going right now.)

I am currently writing a novel that combines Tom Clancy spy suspence with H.P.Lovecraft type gothic horror. It is called the Dagger of Inanna.
  • haha ,I admire this man.

After the disappointment of Inception I hope this is a movie that will actually live up to the hype.

You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, you just might find...you get what you need.
  • Holy shit.
  • del Toro is doing a Lovecraft film? Every nerds dream. It's being produced by Cameron, and shot in 3D using his system? That sound you just heard was 10 million nerds hitting the floor as they fainted.

    Great day for everyone.
  • I am a huge del Toro fan, but I'm getting sick of hearing about what he is "going to do." He hasn't directed anything since 2008. So, please, just make something already!

Adrien Brody is straight out of a Lovecraft book.

I really hope he keeps the Jan character from the original draft when he is rewriting.

Lovecraft is about to blow up again just like in the 70's.

Mind my language. But i just blew my load
  • So wait...I'm confused. I thought he was a lock to direct "The Haunted Mansion"? And even if he still is, I thought the report was that it would be the very next film he directed. Has this changed? Is he now making the exception and directing this first, or has this been the plan all along, and I just wasn't paying attention?
  • He was never going to direct The Haunted Mansion, he is just producing and, I think, writing that movie.
  • Okay, that'd make more sense.

    Thanks.

EDIT: Yeah, I actually just found that article and read it again. It was originally reported that he was directing, but that was later proven to be false, and I just never caught the update.

    I am good with this.
As long as GDT uses the 3D to bring us Lovecraft's "non-Euclidean geometries/archetecture" (which I think could be absolutely MIND-BENDING) and not just tentacles/giant albino penguins 'comin-at-ya!'.

It holds promise, and I predict to be 'the most marvelous failure of 2012'.

A big budget Lovecraft film seems counter-intuitive to me. His works are occult in the truest sense- shrouded in the horror of the unkown. Seeing Cthonic gods rendered in crisp CGI would take the magic out of it. I'm not totally against the idea but I hope del Toro can pull it off and translate what makes Lovecraft special to the screen.

This is just spectacular news, truly excited for this, it's been a long wait!

How many other movies is that guy going to direct and not finish?

I still don't get why that guy gets so much critical praise, he has just made one film that can be called good (Pan's Labyrinth). His other movies were solid. He has some visual imagination but that's all.
  • okayflint
oh my god, i was just thinking about how I was worried he'd never get around to direct this. Now it's officially announced with Cameron producing. Holy crap

    Hallelujah. Hell yeah.

Christmas in July baby! I thought we were years away from this adaptation. I also thought that this film was reliant on whether The Hobbit got made by del Toro for Warners. Don't have to worry about Middle Earth now. Let's go to Antarctica and go straight to Hell in 3D! DAMN!!! And to have it shot in 3D with del Toro's thought process and how he creates worlds within worlds. This is beyond words. Stuart Gordon and others have over the years given us wonderful visions of what the word Lovecraftian really entails. But always they were restrained by budget. Now, we are going to get a glimpse into the Lovecraftian done in a way without issues pertaining to budget or scope. I'll say again, WOW!!!
  • am i the only one who has grown tired of the teases and hints that GDT has been doing for the past f-ing year?! maybe it's his PR people, and not actually him, but seriously they act as though the whole world is hanging on the edge of our seats panting for his work. wait, yer not gonna tell us?! yer only gonna give us a letter from the alphabet?!

    get over yourself.
  • Octoberist
I dont know. Because he's one of the more popular directors out there who was at one time attached to a really big movie (The Hobbit).

It's out there because care. People like his movies. People like him as a director. And because of that, any news of GDT will suffice and it's not because of ego. I've met the dude and he stayed like 2 hours after a screening of Hellboy 2 to sign autographs. Is that ego...or caring for his fans?

That's why. If it's 'What will Brett Ratner Do Next" -athon, then yeah, I can see your argument.
  • Calem
Guillermo's done this for ages, way before he was such a big name. His reason? He is a fanboy himself and knows his kind. A scrap of info is better than no info at all. That, my friend, is love for his audience, not for himself.

YES!!!!!!! best movie news since Nolan announced Inception. can't freaking wait for this.

    ...Technically, I'm not Mexican myself.

I'm just imagining tentacles coming out of the darkness while "Tekeli-li! Tekeli-li!" rings around the auditorium.

Yeah, I'm happy. I'm thrilled. More than anything, I want El Gordo to get this one out of his system. Personally, I enjoy his "original" movies like Cronos and Pan's Labyrinth more than his adaptations.
  • jrice73
Yeah your description is about right! That's going to be a helluva time at the cinema!
  • Rashad
    Del toro is massively overrated
  • Gabe
Yeah well, you know, that's just like, your opinion, man.
