Featurette: Disney’s Tangled - Creating The Look

Walt Disney Animation Studios has released a featurette for their upcoming computer animated film Tangled. The three minute behind the scenes documentary takes a look at the unique look of the new film. Watch it now, embedded after the jump.

Thanks to /Film reader asdf for the tip.

Previously:

Directed by Byron Howard & Nathan Greno (the co-director and head of story on Bolt respectively), this new telling of the classic fairy tale Rapunzel (the original title of the film), will transport audiences “to a stunning CG fantasy world complete with the iconic tower, an evil witch, a gallant hero and, of course, the mysterious girl with the long golden tresses. Expect adventure, heart, humor, and hair, lots of hair.” The lead heroine is voiced by Mandy Moore while Chuck’s Zachary Levi will play a “dashing bandit” named Flynn Ryder who hits the road with the “rebellious, teenage hair apparent.”

Previous director Glen Keane developed a new look for this computer animated film, which is said to look and feel more like a traditional hand-drawn Disney Classic, but in 3D. Apparently the film uses a non-photorealistic rendering technique which will make the surface look like it is painted but still containing depth and dimensions. The movie’s visual style is being based on French Rococo artist Jean-Honore Fragonard’s painting “The Swing”.

A short clip of test footage was shown at Siggraph 2005, where is gained a lot of attention. Earlier concept images had been previously posted online from when the project was titled Rapunzel Unbraided. But the project has since been completely revamped. You can see some concept art from the film here and here. You can read an early reader review here.

Tangled is scheduled to hit theaters in November 24th 2010.

Walt Disney Pictures presents “Tangled,” one of the most hilarious, hair-raising tales ever told. When the kingdom’s most wanted—and most charming—bandit Flynn Rider (voice of Zachary Levi) hides out in a mysterious tower, he’s taken hostage by Rapunzel (voice of Mandy Moore), a beautiful and feisty tower-bound teen with 70 feet of magical, golden hair. Flynn’s curious captor, who’s looking for her ticket out of the tower where she’s been locked away for years, strikes a deal with the handsome thief and the unlikely duo sets off on an action-packed escapade, complete with a super-cop horse, an over-protective chameleon and a gruff gang of pub thugs. In theaters this holiday season in Disney Digital 3D™, “Tangled” is a story of adventure, heart, humor and hair—lots of hair.

Notes:

· “Tangled” marks Walt Disney Pictures’ 50th full-length animated feature.

· Byron Howard directed Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Bolt,” the 2008 animated comedy adventure that grossed more than $300 million worldwide and earned two Golden Globe® nominations (Best Animated Film and Best Original Song), and an Oscar® nomination for Best Animated Feature. Nathan Greno, a 14-year Disney animation veteran, served as head of story on “Bolt,” and has animation and/or story credits on such other animated features as “Mulan,” “Brother Bear,” and “Meet the Robinsons.”

· “Tangled” features new songs and a score by eight-time Oscar®-winning composer/songwriter Alan Menken “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin,” “Pocahontas,” and, most recently, “Enchanted.” Lyrics are by Glenn Slater, a 2008 Tony® and Grammy® nominee for his work on “The Little Mermaid.”

I still think Tangled will be really good, but the marketing for this movie is absolutely atrocious. It's embarassing to be in the theater with friends, see the trailer, and say, "Yeah, soooo... I really want to see that."

Also, I really want to hear more about Alan Menken's score. Stop using Pink!

I can't help but have a good feeling about this

    Nooooooooooooooooo......papyrus strikes again.

I don't know about you all, but I found it humorous that the devs explicitly stated how long Rapunzel has been in the tower (18 years). So does that make her older than 18? Hmmmm? I was expecting more pedo-bait like Ariel (The Little Mermaid) who married at about 16.
  • can i be mean? the disney animators seemed very corporate and plastic in their responses. i somehow doubt the disney working environment is anything like as conducive to creativity as pixar's.

Yay. Finding new ways to serve up the same old stuff.
Not that it doesn't look beautiful, but c'mon. I would love to see a new direction
from these guys. The obsession for the classics is getting in the way of innovation. It seems like this could have been made anytime between 1989 and 2002. I had the same problem with the Frog Princess.
  • The concept behind the Snuggly Duckling is really cool to me - how the tree overtakes the pub and warps it. The imagery and the curvature are fascinating.

2D vs CG - I think this comparison is something of a red herring for animation debates. Remember, these two approaches to animation are just tools for storytelling. Inevitably its the quality of the execution that determines how entertained we are. Which is to say, there's no reason Tangled can't capture the imagination the way Snow White or Pinochio has for generations. It's the SUM of it's parts (only ONE being CG animation) that bring us joy.

Honestly, how often do you find yourself reflecting on the individual tools used to bring an excellent movie together when you're watching it. Even with Pixar, I can SEE the digital animation for the first 5 minutes of any of their movies, and then it kind of blends into the background with the rest of the experience.

Tangled looks amazing already and there's no reason to doubt otherwise. If the other elements (story, character development, originality, music, etc.) can match this as well, this will be another Disney classic to cherish. Period.

this is just another step in the direction of eradicating 2D animation honestly.

-the first step was pixar, telling all the best stories in cgi,
-the second with telling the western world that the only 2d stories that will be told here are about "disney" princesses
    - and now they release a cg movie about a "disney" princess with all the charm of a 2d feature, and they do it with glen keanes style.

    good bye 2D.
  • While many of Disney Animation's previous efforts haven't been the greatest, I still remain hopeful each time that they'll create something well magical again. It doesn't look like regular Disney films will reach the level of Pixar quality, or even come close, but still I remain hopeful that they'll increase. I'm quite excited to see Tangled as I've followed the film for so long through it's many different stages of development, all the way back to when it was going to be part live action, Enchanted style film. It's always a joy to follow film development for so long and finally see the final product. The art style is quite interesting also in their attempt to make CG feel more hand-drawn and painting like. Though I still prefer 2D animation over CG (unless it's Pixar), I'm curious to see how well their attempt turns out in the end.

The concept art makes me so much more excited for this film than the teaser trailer does.
  • Same with me. The art looks amazing, shame that the trailer was horrible.

    Helllllll yeahhhhh tangled!
  • misterclock
    thanks for posting.
  • some of the artwork look really gorgeous

  • Mey-Ling
    I like the look.
  • First clue that this movie will stink: the chose Papyrus for their font in the featurette. Apparently Disney is now designing high school PowerPoints...
  • TheGreenMalice
    I concur.
  • Propadanda
Only thing needed to be known to make it obvious that the movie will suck: it's not made by Pixar.

    duh
  • TheGreenMalice
    Bolt wasn't bad.
  • Propadanda
Haha, I love Bolt, I was just making the obligatory Pixar remark you see on every animation page before someone else could.

There was a pinch of sarcasm involved.
  • Petteri.
Just like Avatar did for their title.
  • TheGreenMalice
One could argue that Avatar wasn't that good. Everything from the font to the story to the mech wielding a knife, was completely mediocre.
  • tej
well, it ws a blast to watch regardless.
  • Matt
First clue that your comment stinks, you are deciding whether or not the movie will suck based the font design in the featurettes.
  • TheGreenMalice
Font choice is everything. Suck it Matt.
