Movie Trailer: Joe Dante’s The Hole

the_hole_3d

If you don’t recognize director Joe Dante’s name, than chances are you didn’t grow up watching movies in the 1980’s. His filmography includes Gremlins, Small Soldiers, The Howling, a segment of Twilight Zone: The Movie, Explorers, Innerspace, and The Burbs. The Hole is Dante’s first feature directing gig since Looney Toons: Back in Action.

In fact, you may have read about this project long ago as it was completed in early 2009, and even screened at the 2009 Toronto Film Festival. That is where I saw the film. It is a tame but fun throwback to the PG-13 horror movies from my childhood. This is the type of movie that has sadly disappeared sometime over the last decade or two.

I’m still not sure when or if this film will ever hit theaters, as no release date has been announced. I’m surprised that one of the Hollywood distributors isn’t jumping at the opportunity to add another 3D film to their release schedule. And it should be mention that The Hole was filmed in 3D, not post converted.

Watch the trailer embedded after the jump, and leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Official Plot Synopsis:

From director Joe Dante comes a family-friendly 3D thriller that explores the fears and secrets buried deep within the human mind. After moving into a new neighborhood, brothers Dane & Lucas and their neighbor Julie discover a bottomless hole in the basement of their home. They find that once the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed. With strange shadows lurking around every corner and nightmares coming to life, they are forced to come face to face with their darkest fears to put an end to the mystery of THE HOLE.

Looks like a higher budget version of the old Goosebumbs television series. Some the shots look a bit cheap and poorly lit.
  • Great to see Joe Dante but sad to hear 3D again.
  • YAY JOE DANTE!
  • Wow that looks like crap. Also, it should be renamed The Hatch.
  • Wasn't there a similar film about a hole to hell in some kids backyard. I remember it being pretty good but can't remember the title.

Edit: Just remembered it's called The Gate.
  • spoiler: in the hole, Desmond Hume has to press a button every 108 minutes.

Film looks really great, but that train wreck of an actor Chris Massoglia ruins practically anything he's in with his forced and cringe inducing acting.

I've seen this, and thought it was a pretty fun horror movie for kids.
  • Gil is a lyer.
    No you haven't. Stop lying.

Hmm... could be fun, but I dunno something about it just feels bleh

Looks direct to DVD quality imo.
  • Retitle it "Luke & Owen Wilson: The Younger Years"

This looks like "Are You Afraid of the Dark: The Movie"

This actually... looks fun? I don't normally go for these types of movies, and I never have, but its a welcome change from the slop they've been putting out for kids. Looks solid.
  • Serious Evil Dead basement vibes from the look of the lid over the hole.

'Dead by dawn! I'll swallow your soul!'
  • I saw the film at TIFF and I thought it was a very fun 3D film. It was one of the first 3D films I saw that used the effects more for depth than gimmicky pop-outs (though there are some of those too).
  • Looney Tunes: Back in Action was the best Looney tunes hybrid animated/live-action film I've ever seen. Gremlins was great.

If you ever get the opportunity to hear Dante talk about movies, I suggest you do it. The man has an incredible encyclopedia-like knowledge of cinema. I saw him at a celebration of 50s sci-fi films and he was fantastic.

And be sure to visit his site Trailers From Hell. It's great.

How Brett Ratner and Paul WS Anderson constantly gets work and Dante doesn't is one of the great there-is-no-God-type frustrations.

    Huh-huh...."Hole"....huh-huh....

Every part of that trailer made it look like a random movie mash-up video. (ie Jumanji, Zathura, that other similar movie, Alice in Wonderland, etc.)

I watched this last year at Tiff. It was a a great family movie with an 80s sensibility and cool mild scares for the kids. I hope it gets a release. The 3d was one of the best I've seen for Live Action.

I have this film on DVD, but it stars a completely different cast and is about a much different type of hole.

    This version looks like crap.
  • There's a porn joke in there somewhere but for the life of me I can't see it.
  • comic book guy
Crap. looks exactly like 'aliens in the attic'.
  • Um...did you see "Aliens in the Attic"? I don't care how bad this movie is, if Dante directed it, it'll still run circles around that FOX kiddy garbage.

I love the old days of Dante's movies. He has his own style, that is cheap but cool. Handmade fun.

Though I might be too old for it, now...

Gremlins and The Howling were awesome. Dante is a master at B-horror. I'd love to see this, especially because it was FILMED in 3D.
  • WideJuly
Any idea what it's rated? It's hard to tell if I'll be seeing it on Syfy or ABC Family.

    They recast Doc. Brown? Goddamnit.
