google

Here’s a piece of marketing for Clash of the Titans that is at least commendably sneaky. Go to the UK version of Google. Search Kick-Ass. What do you get? In the main results, just what you’d expect to: IMDB, the official site and so on… but over in the sidebar of sponsored advertising?

First of all, you get an ad for Clash of the Titans, Warner Bros. big would-be blockbuster, which is opening in direct competition with Kick-Ass. They’ve clearly stumped up a lump and purchased some Google AdWords action. Bleeding Cool spotted this first, and made a screen cap.

But since then, there’s been some even sneakier action. A new ad has appeared, clearly purchased by Universal, the UK distributors of Kick-Ass. It reads “Don’t Be Conned. Heroes Don’t Clash, Real Heroes Kick-Ass. Join Up Now youtube.com/kickass

dont-be-conned

A neat trick by team Clash, a neater trick by team Kick-Ass.

  • Trickery? Really? Do you have any comprehension of how AdWords works or what business competition is? Just because it's a movie and it's art doesn't mean there's no business sense behind it.

What a clever move by warner brothers. IT's a completely legitimate business practice and the studio execs actually do have quite the head on their shoulders if they do it. But seriously, does anybody click those? I always thought everybody ignored those side ads.
  • And the point of this useless point is...?

Warner should be sued, not for their sneaky ad but for their claims of an EPIC adventure. Poor trailer, awful making of piece and I have a feeling you have seen the best of the film already and that's not a good sign.

Kick-Ass has simply lived up to it's title in all aspects.
  • Kick-Ass wins for marketing, in both Google AdWords and posters.
  • Ad-block plus FTW. I don't have to suffer seeing (most) ads, including this.

No kidding. I was baffled a while back when people were complaining about some ad that showed up on /film. I had no idea /film even ran ads on their site. I had also completely forgotten about google adwords.
  • Lol, sometimes I feel bad considering I'm not helping /film with their ad sales, altho I really don't think I'm hurting either. But I just hate banner ads, and I'm a marketing student!
  • Wow, sneaky sneaky. Kick-Ass definitely has the upper hand. Clash of the Titans could get more publicity if they had a better trailer. It was a terrible trailer.
  • Also you guys should not down that this is only happening on the UK version of Google search.
  • BrendonConnelly
    That's actually in the story.
  • Wow I completely missed that. My bad.
  • 'Heroes don't clash, real heroes Kick-Ass.' Man that's awesome.
  • That's just too funny. I'm going to call it a draw, for now.
  • The Clash of the Titans ad isn't there anymore. I just searched it up and the only one that comes up is the Kick Ass ad.
  • Zubostl
Childish from both sites, but I don't care. I have a good feeling about both movies.

did someone just delete a comment that talked about how this is the film business. it's a business or something like that, looks like someone did. interesting.
  • Warner Bros. countered again! (Though not nearly as clever an attempt as Universal's I must say...) It says "This epic adventure will kickass on
    the 2nd of April".
  • bastards !!!

no, really... it's a clever marketing strategy! I've seen the same on Youtube. Someone would tag a video with "HOT BABES IN BIKINI!" as a keyword and when you click on that, it's actually a goofy video of a little kid falling over a skateboard.
  • niiiicccckkkkk
My friend titles all of his videos as 'Brad Pitt Naked'. His stupid shorts have hit 100,000 views in mere weeks
  • man
    'Brad Pitt Naked'??!?
I gave you both a reply and a Like
  • That's actually a clever little ad. Makes the Titans one seem silly now.
  • Wait til the summer hits!
"Some "A" TEAM are no real KILLER(S), WE ARE!!!
    --With love, PREDATORS"

Google is gonna go bazzinga on all of us, man!!!
  • Enthropii
God, this is so sad... remember back when movies were watched because they were actually good?
  • Grow up. Film is a business, and marketing is a requirement of every business. This is clever marketing.
  • durka
A good movie doesn't hurt though... fag.
  • Thanks for that, apparently the 24 likes I have mean nothing...

Oh, and you've been flagged for inappropriate language, I really don't appreciate the use of that word.
